London National Theatre Live: Mrs Warren’s Professionby Bernard Shaw at Megaron the Athens Concert Hall

Megaron the Athens Concert Hall will host, on Thursday, December 4 at 20:00, a screening of the acclaimed production Mrs Warren’s Profession, as presented at London’s Garrick Theatre in the West End.

George Bernard Shaw’s iconic play provocative, deeply human, and timelessly politicalcomes to life on stage under the direction of the award-winning Dominic Cooke.

Imelda Staunton & Bessie Carter – Mother and daughter on stage and in life
In the leading role of Mrs Warren, the distinguished Imelda Staunton (The Crown, Harry Potter) portrays a woman who has managed to secure a better life for her daughter through socially condemned choices. Opposite her, Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) Staunton’s daughter in real life plays Vivie Warren, a young woman who reacts with anger and disillusionment upon learning the truth about her mother.
Their on-stage partnership, at once confrontational and tender, powerfully highlights the play’s dramatic depth and its sharp feminist undercurrents. As Staunton notes, the performance “raises essential questions about women’s role in society and the choices they make to survive.”

A once-‘forbidden’ play that remains strikingly relevant
Written in 1893, the play was initially banned by Lord Chamberlain as “immoral” and premiered only in 1902, sparking heated debate. Even today, it continues to resonate with its unflinching examination of social conventions, hypocrisy, and the economic inequalities faced by women.
This modern adaptation of Mrs Warren’s Profession seeks not only to revisit the moral implications of Shaw’s work but also to foreground the exploitative nature of society—seen through the eyes of a mother and daughter.

Presented in collaboration with the British Council in Greece and the British Embassy in Athens.
