Autumn at the Athens Concert Hall: A season of music, theatre, and celebration (October–December)

The Athens Concert Hall (Megaron) opens its doors for this year’s artistic season with a rich program. Greek and international artists meet the public, bringing with them the power of music, art, and creation. Guided by knowledge and a commitment to quality and cultural contribution, Megaron presents productions and experiences that move and inspire.

October 17: The season begins with the internationally renowned Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, in her first appearance in Greece, promising an interpretation filled with dramatic intensity and lyrical power. She is joined by fellow Lithuanian pianist Lukas Geniušas in a journey through Russian romantic song, featuring masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

November 14 & 15: Utopia, under Teodor Currentzis, presents for the first time in Greece the symphonic masterpiece The Ring without Words, arranged by Lorin Maazel – a unique symphonic experience.

December 16: The ensemble Les Arts Florissants, under Scottish tenor and conductor Paul Agnew, performs one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest sacred works, the Christmas Oratorio. Joining them is a distinguished roster of lyrical singers, all with long and fruitful experience in baroque repertoire.

October 22: Two virtuosos, cellist Sol Gabetta and pianist Bertrand Chamayou, join forces in a program ranging from Mendelssohn and Brahms to contemporary masters Rihm and Widmann.

November 28 – February 26: A thematic cycle dedicated to Sergei Rachmaninoff begins, inviting five of the most important Greek pianists to interpret his works in five distinct recitals: Vassilis Varvaressos (28/11), Vassilis Tsabropoulos (9/12), George-Emmanuel Lazaridis (25/1/26), Alexandra Papastefanou (3/2/26), and Alexia Mouza (26/2/26).

November 13 – 18: For the fourth consecutive year, the Jazz @ Megaron series presents Greek jazz ensembles and hosts two major international groups: the Stacey Kent Trio (13/11) and the Richard Bona – Alfredo Rodriguez Trio (18/11). Alongside them, leading figures of the Greek jazz scene promise unforgettable evenings full of rhythm, improvisation, and captivating melodies.

November 7 – 9: The dance company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens brings the expressive force and grandeur of contemporary ballet to Athens, with two choreographies by Mauro Bigonzetti: The Four Seasons and Cantata.

December 20 – January 5: Megaron transforms into a festive wonderland for all ages with the original musical Aladdin and the Three Christmas Wishes – a new large-scale production with dazzling costumes and sets, promising a flying theatrical adventure. Text by Myrto Kontova, direction by Sophia Spyratou – Chloe Mantzari, lyrics by Gerasimos Evangelatos, music by Stefanos Korkolis.

The Athens State Orchestra will give its traditional Christmas Gala, a co-production titled Around the World in 80 (and a few) minutes (30/12), while the Camerata welcomes the New Year with Strauss waltzes under the baton of Dionysis Grammenos (4/1/26).

November 2 – December 28: The Camerata – Friends of Music Orchestra, conducted by George Petrou, presents three major concerts on period instruments. The season opens on 2/11 with the Mozart Concerto Festival, featuring authentic sounds of Mozart’s era with Greek soloists. On 19/11, two symphonic masterpieces from 1822 will be performed: Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. On 28/12, Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine will be performed for the first time in Greece on period instruments, conducted by Emiliano Gonzalez Toro.

December 20: In a co-production of the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra (ELSON) and Megaron, violinist Leonidas Kavakos joins cellist Timotheos Gavriilidis-Petrin for a rare performance of Brahms’ Double Concerto, alongside ELSON and conductor Dionysis Grammenos. The program closes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World.

October 12 & December 21: Two special concerts feature Megaron’s resident organist Ourania Gassiou. On 12/10, the internationally acclaimed performer explores the contemporary organ repertoire, while visual artist Charalambos Sevostlidis enriches the experience with 3D projections. On 21/12, Gassiou and fellow distinguished organist Eleni Keventsidou – both pupils of Nicholas Kynaston – perform a recital in memory of their great teacher: two organists, four hands, one instrument.

October 29 – December 7 | Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall:

• On 29/10, international mezzo-soprano Alexandra Gravas opens the season with Blues me Through the Night, evoking the interwar atmosphere from Berlin cabarets and Paris music halls to New York stages and Attik’s famous “Mandra.”
• On 4/11, baritone Aris Argiris and pianist Peter Bortfeldt juxtapose iconic moments from Verdi and Wagner in a unique recital.
• On 20/11, violist Ilias Sdoukos and pianist Manos Kitsikopoulos invite audiences to a moonlit journey with Shostakovich.
• On 22/11, soprano Sonia Theodoridou, the Ensemble Sonus Amantes, and the Cantelena and Polymnia choirs present MARE NOSTRUM, a Mediterranean tribute that unites peoples and cultures.

The hall also hosts Sunday noon concerts, beginning 19/10 with pianist Dora Bakopoulou and Greek soloists in three landmark works of chamber music. On 23/11, young violinist Ioannis Nikolis makes his Megaron debut with pianist Svetlana Karpunkina. Finally, on 7/12, the Choir of the “Domna Samiou” Municipal Music Society performs a reimagining of the landmark album Journey through Greece (1972), honoring the legacy of Domna Samiou.

October 20 – December 4 | Theatre at Megaron
The “Theatre at Megaron” cycle opens on October 20 & 21 with Katerina Didaskalou starring in Clytemnestra by Marguerite Yourcenar, from the collection Feux, in a dramatized version with original translation and direction by Antonis Galeos. Anastasia Galerou-Vlassi appears as Iphigenia.
From November 13 to 16, playwright and director Christophoros Christophis, winner of the “Karolos Koun” playwriting award, uses humor in a historical tragicomedy on the border of fairytale, focusing on the figure of Joseph Stalin, entitled The Tyrant and the Daughter, starring Dimitris Piatas.

As part of the outstanding play transmissions from National Theatre Live, on September 25 Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire will be screened, directed by Benedict Andrews and starring Gillian Anderson (Sex Education), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), and Ben Foster (Lone Survivor).
On October 30, the new play Inter Alia by Suzie Miller will be presented, featuring Oscar-nominated Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, Saltburn). On December 4, George Bernard Shaw’s classic Mrs. Warren’s Profession will be shown, directed by Dominic Cooke, with Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Bessie Carter (Bridgerton).

October 11 – 30 | Music of Today
The “Music of Today” cycle highlights the vitality and diversity of contemporary music. On October 11, the L’ Anima String Quartet will perform two new works by Greek composers Yiannis Kouroudis and Charalambos Stafylidis (6:30 p.m.), followed by a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15 in a transcription for piano, violin, cello, and percussion, alongside works by Alfred Schnittke (8:30 p.m.).
On October 14, pianist Stefanos Thomopoulos guides the audience through contemporary piano repertoire, and on October 30, the Collegium Musicum of Athens, under Nikos Athineos, dedicates its concert to Greek music, with works by Dimitris Dragatakis, G.A. Papaioannou, Theodoros Antoniou, and Iosif Papadatos. A cycle that brings today’s music to the forefront with exciting new soundscapes.

October 18 – December 13 | For Children at Megaron
For children, shadow theatre artist Ilias Karellas presents from October 18 to December 13 the brand-new shadow musical Kara-Cartoon – an imaginative performance where traditional Shadow Theatre meets the live music of Burger Project and the world of comics, inviting children and adults alike to actively participate through interactive games.
From December 19 to January 5, 2026, Karagiozis returns with festive cheer in Karagiozis’ Christmas in Cuba, promising a winter filled with laughter, imagination, and music.
