As part of its Summer in the Courtyard programme, STOA Culture, supported by PPC as its Major Sponsor, welcomes acclaimed American saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier for his first-ever performance in Athens. Joined by his quartet, Collier presents Collier Plays Coltrane, a powerful musical tribute marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend John Coltrane.
Rather than recreating Coltrane’s music note for note, Collier approaches the repertoire as a deeply personal exploration of the saxophonist’s artistic and spiritual legacy. Through his own distinctive voice, he reinterprets the work of one of jazz’s most influential figures, connecting Coltrane’s groundbreaking vision with the sound and sensibility of today.
At just 28 years old, Isaiah Collier has already established himself as one of the most exciting new voices in international jazz. Born and raised in Chicago, he developed his musical identity under the influence of artists such as John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Roscoe Mitchell, who also became one of his mentors. With six albums as a bandleader, international acclaim and a rapidly growing reputation, Collier is widely recognised as one of the leading figures of the new generation of spiritual jazz.
Combining extraordinary technical command with emotional depth and spiritual intensity, Collier does not simply preserve the jazz tradition—he reinvents it for a new era. Many critics already regard him as one of the most compelling successors to the great African American jazz lineage.
In a year dedicated worldwide to the legacy of John Coltrane, Isaiah Collier’s Athens debut offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of contemporary jazz’s most gifted young musicians in a concert that honours the past while looking boldly toward the future.
The concert is presented with the support of the Half Note Jazz Club.
