OKUPA: Redefining Athenian Hospitality

2 mins read

OKUPA arrives to challenge the traditional hospitality scene of Athens with a unique concept designed for today’s modern traveller – the multicultural wanderer who seeks a space that feels less like an impersonal hotel and more like a platform for networking, inspiration, relaxation, and shared experiences.

Its name derives from the Spanish verb ocupar (“to occupy”), here redefined as the reclaiming of spaces. Behind every decision, even the smallest, lies one clear intention: to connect communities across borders, to bridge the gap between locals and travellers.

An Athenian experience that reshapes hospitality

OKUPA is a vibrant urban hub that feeds the appetite of music, art, and food lovers alike. An Athenian experience that reshapes the boundaries of hospitality, turning travellers into participants and locals into hosts of a new, collective culture. Within its walls, locals and visitors naturally come together: sharing food and cocktails, joining craft workshops, wellness sessions, or cultural activities that spark new encounters and inspiration.

At the heart of the space beats the Okupa Kitchen & Listening Bar – a cosy yet edgy spot, with room for 50 indoors and another 80 in the courtyard, designed for gatherings that stretch from sunrise coffees to dusk cocktails.

The menu is bold and international: from the melt-in-your-mouth beef cheek croquettes to the iconic soft shell crab burger with smoky chipotle mayo. At the bar, classic cocktails are reimagined alongside house creations made with artisanal ingredients, while natural wines and craft beers round out the experience. As the night falls, carefully curated soundtracks set the mood and elevate the atmosphere.

Beyond hospitality

But OKUPA is more than a hotel, restaurant, or listening bar. On the first floor, guests will find a comfortable co-working space, ideal for those travelling with their laptops who want to work in a setting that blends professionalism with creative energy.

In the basement, a different scene unfolds: yoga classes, seminars, and events that turn the space into a hub of wellness and idea-sharing. And here lies a unique surprise – during renovation, part of an ancient aqueduct was discovered, carefully preserved in collaboration with the Archaeological Service, and now on view for all. Imagine practising yoga next to ancient ruins: an experience that fuses contemporary life with Athenian history in the most unexpected way.

The people behind the vision

OKUPA was born from the passion of two founders with different yet complementary backgrounds.

George Batrouni, with a decade in London’s financial sector and another ten years in hospitality, is the founder of Barsol bar in Beirut and the start-up FlyFoot, which organised tailor-made football trips in Europe. His passion lies in bringing people together around shared values, hosting with warmth, and constantly innovating with new ideas. Hrag Darakjian, with 15 years of experience at the intersection of gastronomy, music, and culture, has worked in London’s fusion kitchens, as well as in Paris, Athens, and Beirut, conceptualising and launching new F&B projects. His passion for flavour led him across Asia to study cuisine at its roots, and to Scotland to master the art of whisky. An active DJ and music curator, he is known for his rich vinyl collection and his ability to set the perfect vibe.

OKUPA is an open invitation to experience Athens differently – through taste, music, history, and the community it creates.
