The Panagiotis and Effie Micheli Foundation and the Ioannou F. Kostopoulou Foundation present the exhibition of works by Evridiki Kostopoulou (1907-1980) in Athens

After its successful presentation in Kalamata in 2023, the exhibition of the works of the painter Evridiki Kostopoulou (1907-1980) will come to Athens from 21 October to 21 November 2024 at the Micheli Foundation’s Hall of Events and Exhibitions. The collaboration between two major cultural institutions, the Panagiotis and Effie Michelis Foundation and the Ioannou F. Kostopoulou Foundation, continues to promote the work of the Greek artist.

Evridiki Kostopoulou never sought to join the artistic pioneers who came to Greece. Instead, she painted for the joy of creation. Her constant preoccupation with painting, the small scale of her works, the frequent absence of drawing and the use of hardboard indicate that she painted outdoors. Her style matured over time as she became more confident with the brush, and while in her early works her subjects were mainly landscapes, houses and a few compositions of human figures, still lifes with flowers and tools, later she devoted herself to natural landscapes, her eye developing and diversifying over time.

Her landscapes include ‘moments’ of Hydra, Mytilene – mainly olive groves – Molyvos, Kavouri, the Cyclades, Ipati, Dafni, the National Garden and the Acropolis. She painted in places where the green of nature meets the ochre of the coast and the intense blue of the sea. Her personal style has remained relatively constant over the years and the large number of her works testifies to the importance of painting to her.

Lambros Anagnostopoulos, President of the Panagiotis and Effie Micheli Foundation, said of the exhibition. “The exhibition is also a minimal tribute to her son, Yannis Kostopoulos, for his long-term and substantial contribution, especially in the early years of the organisation and operation of the Michelis Foundation. Yannis Kostopoulos was elected on 20 May 1984 as a member of the first Board of Directors of the Michelis Foundation, to which he devoted 37 consecutive years.”

Dimitrios P. Mantzounis, President of the Ioannou F. Kostopoulou Foundation, points out that Eurydice Kostopoulou devoted her free time to observing Greek nature, taking lessons from renowned painters. She also bequeathed her talent to her daughter Annie and granddaughter Daphne Kostopoulou.

The works in the exhibition come from private collections and the collection of the Ioannou F. Kostopoulou Foundation.
