One of the most influential novels of the 20th century returns to cinemas in a new adaptation by acclaimed French filmmaker François Ozon. The Stranger (L’Étranger), based on the seminal 1942 novel by Albert Camus, premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival and marks Ozon’s latest exploration of identity, alienation, and social conventions.
Set in 1938 Algiers, the film follows Meursault, a seemingly ordinary office worker whose emotional detachment places him at odds with the expectations of society. After attending his mother’s funeral without displaying grief, he resumes his daily routine and begins a relationship with Marie. Yet a chance involvement with his neighbour Raymond Sintès gradually draws him into a chain of events that culminates in a life-altering tragedy on a sun-drenched beach.
For Ozon, adapting Camus was less about recreating a literary classic and more about exploring the mystery of its central character. Known for films such as 8 Women, Swimming Pool, Frantz and Summer of 85, the director approaches the material through both its existential dimensions and its physical, sensory reality. His version places particular emphasis on the social atmosphere of colonial Algeria and the tensions between the communities that inhabited it, offering contemporary audiences a renewed perspective on the notion of the “outsider.”

Benjamin Voisin delivers a restrained and compelling performance as Meursault, building the character through silence, observation and inner tension. Rebecca Marder brings warmth and vitality to Marie, while Pierre Lottin, whose performance earned a César Award for Best Supporting Actor, lends Raymond Sintès an unsettling blend of charm and menace. The cast is completed by French cinema veterans Denis Lavant and Swann Arlaud.

The adaptation was developed with the approval and support of Catherine Camus, the author’s daughter, who contributed insights into the novel’s creation and historical context. Critics have praised the film as a sophisticated and deeply personal interpretation of Camus’ masterpiece, with publications including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Cineuropa highlighting its atmospheric power and thoughtful approach to the source material.
