At the newly renovated MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the exhibition “Frida Kahlo – Her Photos” is presented for the first time in Greece, following more than 20 international stops, from October 3, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
Through 241 previously unpublished photographs representing different periods and figures in Frida Kahlo’s life, the exhibition unveils aspects of the personal world of the internationally acclaimed Mexican artist and offers a new perspective on the turbulent life of one of the most enigmatic and iconic figures in Latin American art.
The exhibition unfolds across six central thematic sections – Beginnings; The Blue House; Politics, Revolutions and Diego; Broken Body; Frida’s Loves; Photography – each of which highlights the crucial role photography played in Frida Kahlo’s life.
The exhibition is organized by the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Diego Rivera–Anahuacalli Museum, curated by Pablo Ortiz Monasterio.
An Archive – A Hidden Collection
Despite the importance of photography in Frida Kahlo’s life, a large part of her photographic collection remained hidden from the public for several decades. When she died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera donated their home – known as Casa Azul (The Blue House) in Mexico City – to the Mexican people, so that it could be turned into a museum dedicated to her life and work. This marked the beginning of what is today the Frida Kahlo Museum, one of the most visited museums in the world.
Although Rivera donated Kahlo’s artworks and personal belongings to the museum, he requested that a portion of them be kept away from prying eyes. As a result, this personal archive – containing more than 6,000 photographs, along with drawings, letters, medicines, and clothing – remained sealed for fifty years, locked in a bathroom inside Casa Azul, gaining an almost mythical aura over time.
The archive was finally unsealed in 2003. A curated selection of the newly discovered photographs forms the basis of the exhibition “Frida Kahlo – Her Photos”, now presented at the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.
