From November 14 to 16, the Onassis Stegi presents a three-day film tribute to Wim Wenders, featuring a masterclass by the director himself on the Small Stage and a conversation with Afroditi Panagiotakou on the Main Stage. Screenings of his films will take place throughout the building, along with a 3D film installation inspired by Edward Hopper, presented on level +3.

From Paris, Texas to Wings of Desire, his cinematic universe doesn’t rush – it allows space for wandering. His characters, often silent observers, notice the small and vast moments unfolding around them.
His films give viewers the space to breathe, and this retrospective at the Onassis Stegi reminds us that the essence of life lies in silences, glances, and journeys. Following the wanderers who search for themselves – from Hamburg to Hollywood, from harsh realities to the dreamlike – Wim Wenders lands at Stegi in his own uniquely grounded way.
A three-day cinematic celebration will take over the entire Stegi building, with screenings of 13 films, a masterclass and discussion with the great auteur, and a 3D short film installation premiering for the first time in Greece. The “Road Trilogy” meets Room 666 and The American Friend; Somebody Comes into the Light explores games of light, while Reverse Angle turns inward to thought.
Wenders’ “hidden” short films meet the living tableaux of Edward Hopper, while his award-winning feature films culminate in a special surprise – the five-hour director’s cut of Until the End of the World, screened for the first time in Greece.
Wim Wenders gained international acclaim in 1984 with Paris, Texas, co-written with Sam Shepard. This deeply moving drama, following a man emotionally and physically adrift in the American Southwest, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Three years later, Wenders received the Best Director Award at Cannes for Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire), in which angels wander through modern-day Berlin – a film that became one of cinema’s most poetic reflections on existence and longing.

What does the future of cinema look like for Wenders? What continues to inspire him? How does he choose the landscapes he films? Through visual material and personal reflections, Wenders will share his creative process, his experiences filming across diverse global settings, and the enduring power of cinema to move, challenge, and connect.

Wenders’ immersive 3D installation, created for the “Edward Hopper” exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler (Switzerland, 2020), invites viewers to “enter Hopper’s world.” Rather than reproducing his paintings, Wenders builds atmospheres, perspectives, and cinematic spaces that reflect Hopper’s ongoing dialogue with film. The work is at once a tribute, a meditation, and a contemporary statement about one of the most cinematic painters of the 20th century.

Born in Düsseldorf in 1945, Wim Wenders became internationally known as one of the pioneers of the New German Cinema of the 1970s and is now regarded as one of the leading figures of contemporary world cinema. As a screenwriter, director, producer, photographer, and author, his work spans award-winning feature films and documentaries, international photography exhibitions, and numerous books on film and visual storytelling. He lives and works in Berlin with his wife, Donata Wenders.
His films –Paris, Texas (1984) and Wings of Desire (1987) – are now part of global cinema heritage, along with his groundbreaking documentaries Pina, Buena Vista Social Club, and The Salt of the Earth.
In 2023, his two latest works premiered at the Cannes Film Festival: the 3D documentary Anselm, about artist Anselm Kiefer, and the Japanese feature Perfect Days, for which actor Kōji Yakusho won the Best Actor Award. Perfect Days went on to become Wenders’ most internationally successful film and was nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature in 2024.

In 2012, Wenders and Donata founded the Wim Wenders Foundation in Düsseldorf, preserving and restoring his film, photographic, and literary legacy and supporting innovative young filmmakers through the Wim Wenders Grant. His Berlin-based production company, Road Movies, established in 1976, has produced or co-produced over 100 films, focusing on creative documentaries and 3D projects.
