On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the National Archaeological Museum will remain open with free admission to all its exhibitions. The Museum’s opening hours on that day will be 08:30–15:30.

The National Archaeological Museum is the largest museum in Greece. Originally founded to house all the finds from 19th-century excavations-mainly from Attica but also from other regions of the country-it gradually evolved into a central National Museum enriched with discoveries from every corner of the Greek world. Its collections, numbering more than 11,000 exhibits, offer visitors a sweeping panorama of ancient Greek civilization from the dawn of prehistory to late antiquity.

The museum is housed in an imposing neoclassical building, constructed in the late 19th century based on plans by L. Lange and later completed by Ernst Ziller. The exhibition spaces cover an area of 8,000 sq. meters and include five major permanent collections:

The Collection of Prehistoric Antiquities, featuring works from the great civilizations that flourished in the Aegean from the 6th millennium to 1050 B.C. (Neolithic, Cycladic, and Mycenaean), as well as finds from the prehistoric settlement of Thera.
The Sculpture Collection, which traces the development of ancient Greek sculpture from the 7th century B.C. to the 5th century A.D., through outstanding masterpieces of art.
The Vase and Minor Arts Collection, showcasing representative works of ancient Greek pottery from the 11th century B.C. to the Roman era, along with the Stathatos Collection, a diachronic assemblage of minor artworks.
The Metalwork Collection, containing unique original pieces-statues, figurines, and fine metal objects.
– And finally, the Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection, the only one of its kind in Greece, featuring artworks dating from the Predynastic Period (5000 B.C.) to the Roman conquest.
