Half Note Jazz Club Presents: Miranda Verouli – A Jazz Tribute to Sergio Mendes

The well-known performer of Brazilian music Miranda Verouli, together with the excellent jazzmen of her quintet, return to the stage of the Half Note Jazz Club to honor a legend of the global music scene who recently passed away, leaving behind a huge musical legacy: the Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger and producer Sergio Mendes.

Starting off from Rio de Janeiro and studying as a classical pianist, he immigrated to America in the ’60s and recorded with top jazz players of the time (Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Mann), played and partied with superstars (Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones) and brought into the spotlight great compatriots, including Antônio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Jorge Ben Jor, João Donato, Edu Lobo, Carlinhos Brown and many others. He went on to create the group Brasil ’66 and begun to record in English, pop hits of the time, which led him to the top of the charts. He managed to stay relevant for six
decades, renewing his sound and audience, through collaborations with contemporary pop stars, he won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy, while in 2012 he reached the Oscars
nominations with the animation film “Rio”!

The quintet selects well-known and beloved songs from Mendes’ extensive discography, staying true to the sound of his arrangements, mainly with the Brasil ’66 group, but also later ones. At the same time, Miranda translates lyrics and tells stories from the creation of the songs, which put us in the mood of the era.

Miranda Verouli, is a singer/songwriter with a long-standing presence in the Greek jazz
and World scene. She is considered the Ambassador of Brazilian music in Greece and
in 2018, she was honoured by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil with the Medal of
the Knight of the Order of Rio Branco, for her contribution to the promotion of Brazilian
music in Greece.

The event is taking place under the auspices of the Brazilian Embassy in Athens
