Εating and drinking around Herodion Theater

2 mins read

Koukaki is one of the most vibrant and interesting neighborhoods for foodies in Athens. A place where old bakeries and unassuming eateries with traditional recipes stand proudly next to refined upscale restaurants, ethnic kitchens and trendy wine bars.

However, and very surprisingly, it can sometimes prove quite challenging to find the perfect spot for a drink after a show at the Herodion Theater. This is why it is always a good idea to have something planned beforehand -in some cases reservations may be needed-, so you won’t be left disappointed when looking for a friendly place to recap everything you experienced at the ancient theater.

Here are some of our choices that you may find interesting, whether you are up for a full and fancy meal or just a quick bite and/or glass of wine before or after the show.

Fratti Bistro – Cool Bistro

Fratti Bistro

Just a few steps away from the theater, this cool bistro, taking it’s name from the street it’s on, Fratti, stands on its own, turning a mainly residential block into a favorite hangout. Close your eyes and you may think you are in one of Rome’s vibrant bars, eating prosciutto and other Italian delicacies, sipping good wine, surrounded by a good-looking and friendly crowd.

Choose one of the tables outdoors or opt for the bar where you can chat with the witty staff.

Dionysos Zonar’s – Iconic destination

Dionysos Zonar’s

Sometimes you just want a little elegance -ok a lot. If that’s the case, then this iconic destination, at the foot of the Acropolis, is just what you need. With Thissio on one side and Makrygianni street on the other, Dionysos Zonar’s is literarily in the heart of the historic center. The view of the Sacred Temple is mesmerizing, an experience you need to live ate least once, but not all is left up to the Acropolis since this restaurant, built in the early 1960’s boasts an equally beautiful interior and exterior design by the prominent painter Yannis Moralis and his partner, the ceramist Eleni Vernardaki.

The sett paving at the entrance is part of the redevelopment of the space around the Acropolis and Philopappou Hill by Dimitris Pikionis, a project recognized in 1996 by UNESCO, as a monument of modern architecture with global significance. Oh, and the food is good too!

Sense Athens – A rooftop Bar with a view

Sense Athens

The most fine dining option on our list serves up innovative and modern Greek dishes for lunch and dinner, on the rooftop of Athens Was, a five star luxury hotel. Sense Athens is the perfect place for a delicious meal that is gourmet but not pretentious, prepared by Alexandors Charalampopoulos and his team. One of the best Greek chefs, Charalampopoulos is known for his high technique and flavor.

Try the new “enigmatic” menu which is inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries of Ancient Greece and comprises dishes like “Atrapos” which is simply tomato with mint and PDO fat cheese from Kalavryta or “Alade Mystai”, simply put, scallop, roe fish emulsion, jalapeño-peach sorbet and bergamot oil.

Wine with Eleni – A more relaxed atmosphere

Wine with Eleni

In a small, laid back garden next to the Acropolis Museum, Wine with Eleni is the perfect spot for wine lovers who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Eleni Kefalopoulou, the owner, is an actress -with a degree in civil engineering-, turned wine journalist who wishes to introduce new labels and wine cultures to her clientele. This is why she is always there, ready to answer any questions you may have. Try her, she knows her stuff.

Tiki Bar – Imaginative cocktails and comfort food

Tiki Bar

Last but not least, for a little exotic flair, head to the legendary Tiki Bar by the metro station. An insanely big list of classic and imaginative cocktails, finger and comfort food (the tiki burger is recommended) and a fun energy that will either make you feel right at home or thinking that you are at an exotic paradise somewhere in the world. Either way, you will love it!
