“Improvisations in Parallel Mode”: An audiovisual journey through sound and landscape

1 min read

Improvisations in Parallel Mode is an audiovisual album and, at the same time, a journey in search of musical improvisations, soundscapes, and images across the Greek countryside. A work in which sound does not accompany the image, but instead forms the primary narrative axis.

Through improvisational performances and sonic landscapes recorded during the course of the travels, the film composes a parallel world of listening and observation. Musicians, spaces, and fleeting moments coexist, shaping a multi-layered audiovisual work attuned to the ritualistic and mystical elements of both human and natural life. Improvisation is not merely the subject of the film, but also its method of composition.

Moving between documentary and poetic cinema, Improvisations in Parallel Mode proposes an experiential mode of listening, where nature, people, and sound co-create meaning.

Director’s Note

More than a film with a clearly defined script or subject, Improvisations in Parallel Mode is an experiment grounded in improvisation and co-creation. The soundtrack, which runs throughout the film, is composed entirely of the improvisational performances we recorded, later interwoven with soundscapes that captivated us during our journey.

The image functions as a second sensory channel that, in dialogue with sound, has the potential to activate additional senses, allowing the viewer/listener to experience realities beyond the sensory limits that images and sounds impose when encountered separately. Ultimately, the term that best describes the film may be “audiovisual album.”
