Rumba Rules, New Genealogies (2020)
Directed by David N. Bernatchez and Sammy Baloji, in collaboration with Kiripi Katembo Siku
After the screening, there will be a discussion with the directors, Katarina Gregou, and Ioli Tzanetaki.
Following the daily life of one of today’s most important orchestras, Rumba Rules seeks to delve into the heart of a monumental African music genre. As an essay on the concepts of self and its roots, the film culminates in a form of urban polyphony.

Ya Mayi, Lumumba, Xéna La Guerrière, Pitchou Travolta, Alfred Solo, and Soleil Patron are just a few of the nearly thirty artists contributing to the creative life of the Brigade Sarbati orchestra. Entering the group’s world and the city of Kinshasa at the same time, the film explores the essence of Rumba as it penetrates a deep-rooted foundation. It follows the orchestra through its work in the studio, rehearsals, and concerts, where various portraits offer a tour of this renowned Congolese music and the stories it carries. From its roots in local communities to its supporters in the diaspora, the voices that compose the polyphony of Rumba Rules belong to both the past and the present.
