The Pulitzer and Tony Award–winning musical by Jonathan Larson – creator of Rent – “comes to life” in a new production by the GNO Alternative Stage

The explosive and deeply human rock musical Tick, Tick… Boom! by Pulitzer and Tony Award–winning composer and lyricist Jonathan Larson, creator of Rent, is presented for the first time in Greece in a bold new production by the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera.

An autobiographical musical – a tribute to youthful restlessness, to dreams that refuse to fade, and to the belief that no matter what happens, life must go on… with music. From December 6, 2025, and for nineteen performances through January 11, 2026, Tick, Tick… Boom! arrives to electrify the GNO Alternative Stage at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center – a feverish celebration filled with powerful moments, tight embraces, surges of emotion and unforgettable songs:
“Time chases you like rhythm, beating through your life forever / Come, sing it loud, write it a chorus. Try to run – it always finds you.”

The musical, first produced Off-Broadway in June 2001 by Victoria Leacock, Robyn Goodman, Dede Harris, Lorie Cowen Levy and Beth Smith, tells the touching story of a young artist on the brink of turning thirty as he struggles between his dreams, his artistic ambition, and the uncertainty of everyday life. Set in early-1990s New York, it chronicles – with humor, passion, and disarming honesty – the fear of passing time, the hunger to create, and the unwavering belief that despite obstacles, following one’s passion is a fight worth taking.

In its Greek version, the musical is presented on the GNO Alternative Stage with translation and lyric adaptation by Julia Diamantopoulou, music direction by Michalis Papapetrou, and stage direction by Emily Louizou.
Three actors, ten characters, fourteen songs – and a celebratory work devoted to dreams, youth, and the dance between romantic hope and grown-up cynicism.

Tick, Tick… Boom!: A rock portrait caught between passion and time

Before leaving his indelible mark on musical theatre with the groundbreaking Rent – the work destined to change Broadway for good – the ambitious young New Yorker Jonathan Larson (1960–1996) wrote Tick, Tick… Boom! in the late 1980s, as a personal musical diary of a creator trying to find his place in the world of theatre. The work captured his own experiences, his anxiety over time slipping away, the pursuit of artistic fulfillment, and the transformative force of creativity itself.

Tick, Tick… Boom! was first presented in 1990 under the title Boho Days, as a solo piece featuring Larson onstage with only his piano. It was later reshaped by Larson’s friend and collaborator Victoria Leacock and playwright David Auburn into an intimate, three-person musical – with vocal arrangement and orchestration by Stephen Oremus.

After the sudden death of its creator – just shy of his thirty-sixth birthday and a single day before the premiere of Rent (1996) – Tick, Tick… Boom! had its Off-Broadway premiere in 2001. Although that first production closed soon after, impacted by the blow dealt to the performing arts scene in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the musical’s success across the wider American circuit and internationally was enough to secure its longevity. Its journey culminated in the acclaimed 2021 film adaptation, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield, who received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

At the center of the story is Jon – an aspiring composer who shares his creator’s name – fighting to finish the work he hopes will establish him: a sci-fi musical titled Superbia. His girlfriend, Susan, a dancer, is considering leaving New York; his friend Michael has already abandoned acting in favor of the stability of corporate life. Jon stands at a crossroads: cling to the dream of a musical theatre career, or surrender to routine? The countdown to his thirtieth birthday ticks on – literally and metaphorically – and between the beats of that ticking clock, youthful ambition collides with existential dread in an explosive clash.

With driving music, unforgettable songs, humor and heart, Tick, Tick… Boom! is a vibrant work about life, death, and the sustaining power of art – a rock portrait of a creator pulsing between passion and time.

Tick, Tick… Boom! on the GNO Alternative Stage – a work as celebration

In its Greek premiere, Tick, Tick… Boom! comes to life on the Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera as a celebratory work – a wild party where life, art and time pulse to the same beat. Within an imaginative set: a giant birthday cake in constant transformation, the performance finds Jon one week before his thirtieth birthday, counting down before the big boom. Suddenly, he feels achingly alone. He wishes he could be a different kind of Peter Pan or a Little Prince – someone who could steal just a little more time in his journey toward the dream.

For translator and lyric adapter Julia Diamantopoulou, the work was a journey of discovery:

“My path through Tick, Tick… Boom! was like wandering through a universe where time is always present — as rhythm, as enemy, as catalyst. I found myself back in the ’90s and saw the thread that ties then to now. Larson dares to be personal — to write with equal measures of humor and doubt. Behind every word, beyond disappointment and uncertainty, glows the unquenchable light of a young artist dreaming of fulfillment. Thirsting to become the voice of his generation, yet trembling that he may not make it in time.”

The musical is directed by the rising Emily Louizou, in her first collaboration with the Alternative Stage. Louizou notes:

“From the first moment, Tick, Tick… Boom! moved me with the spontaneity of its central character, Larson’s genuine humor, the simplicity with which he presents the pivotal choices almost every person must confront, and above all how masterfully the work balances between light and darkness. Just before the lights go out, just before Jon blows out the candles on his birthday cake, I think of this year’s production as a way to celebrate my own thirtieth birthday and to pay tribute to my own idols. A show that celebrates the power of friendship, the importance of a dream, and the courage to keep moving even when everything around you seems predictable and still.”

Music direction is by Michalis Papapetrou, an experienced figure in the genre. Set and costumes by Niki Psychogiou, movement & choreography by Ioli Filippakopoulou, lighting design by Christos Tziogas, and sound design by David Blouin.

The roles are performed by three young actors and singers of a new generation:
Paris Paraskevadis as Jon, Argyris Lamprou as Michael, and Danai Vassilopoulou as Susan.

The musical ensemble consists of:
Giannis Angelopoulos (drums), Grigoris Danis (guitar), Manos Anagnostopoulos (bass), Michalis Papapetrou / Frixos Mortzos (piano, synthesizer).
