EVENING PROGRAM

CULINARY JOURNEY

What tales do the cuisines of the Aegean tell? What memories live on through gatherings around shared tables? From the catch of the sea to harvested crops, the cuisine of the Cyclades reflects the region’s unique marine and terrestrial biodiversity. As the sun sets on Piraeus, this living heritage unfolds through a communal table where food and drink become an expression of memory, prepared by chefs Theodoros Kassavetis and Stelios Theodorakis of “Lygero” restaurant in northern Syros.

DURATIONAL SOUNDSCAPE

What is the sound of the Aegean? From work songs and village celebrations to humming boat engines and clinking nets, the coastal communities of the Aegean compose a rich and varied sonic history. These island songs, combined with archival and field recordings from Tinos, Amorgos, Sifnos, and beyond, come alive through a radio transmission broadcast simultaneously in Piraeus and Syros, in collaboration with Aigaio FM 95.8.

SCREENING

What is the visual memory of Aegean boatbuilding and seafaring? From historic film reels to contemporary images of coastal life, Archipelago Network preserves and shares the moving-image heritage of the Aegean. This cinematic archive unfolds through a program of historic films and contemporary documentary shorts from islands such as Amorgos, Santorini, Syros, Symi, and beyond – a visual journey spanning seven decades of maritime heritage in the South Aegean.

The Art Explora Festival, a traveling cultural festival across the Mediterranean, makes a ten-day stop at the port of Piraeus from October 3–12, 2025. Visitors can explore exhibitions, concerts, screenings, and workshops on board the world’s first museum boat, the Art Explorer, as well as the quayside at Gate E8. The Greek stopover of the Art Explora Festival is curated by Katerina Tselou.

About Archipelago Network

The Aegean islands are havens of diasporic culture, traditional knowledge, and biodiversity. Yet today, accelerating forces such as overtourism and the global climate crisis exert local pressures on these coastal communities, threatening knowledge systems and environmental equilibriums. In this context, Archipelago Network takes up the Cyclades islands as laboratories for field research, residencies, publications, online projects, and public programs. The initiative works at the intersection of visual practices, cultural life, and the natural environment, providing open access to its digital collections while contributing to the development of local and regional memory through documentation and outreach activities.
