Two Nights, One Dream: Salzträume Unfolds in Athens

1 min read

Two nights. Two openings. One story drifting between sleep and sea.

On December 18, Ruby Art – Gallery opens Salzträume, a site-specific installation by Valia Kapeletzi, curated by Katerina Leontidou. The exhibition marks the second chapter of the cycle Stone and Salt, a series that explores the fragile boundaries between materiality and perception, wakefulness and dream.

At the edge of what we consider real, Salzträume focuses on that elusive moment when consciousness drifts when we are no longer fully awake, yet not entirely asleep, and reality begins to blur. Emerging from Kapeletzi’s ongoing attempt to understand the nature of dreams, the installation invites viewers to slow down, turn inward, and allow boundaries to dissolve.

Through a meticulous and almost meditative process, the artist gives physical form to the dream without stripping it of its mystery. Countless threads pulled for hours in a rhythmic, repetitive act, trace the wandering routes of the mind. Waves of purple and blue mark where thoughts settle, forming memories and fleeting moments that surface like small islands in a quiet sea. Threads, color, and form intertwine in a multilayered landscape where emotions and experiences coexist, overlap, and shift.

Salzträume asks fundamental questions: What happens when we dream? Are we ever completely free, or still tethered to memory and lived experience? What is this infinite, fragile space we call a dream? The installation invites viewers to reflect on these questions, standing between waking life and the subconscious.

When the Dream Spills into the City

On December 20, the world of Salzträume expands beyond the gallery walls and into the urban fabric of Athens. The dream continues at Mosaikon Hotel with a separate group exhibition, curated by Bianca Bauer, featuring works by Vangelis Savvas (Crux Galerie), Maisie Maris, Lucca Cora Süss (KALI Gallery), Mitsi Papazachou, Theano Giannezi, Marilena Kranioti, and Valia Kapeletzi.

Here, the dream fragments, multiplies, and takes on new voices. Moving through the city, it transforms into a shared experience—an echo of inner landscapes now dispersed across different artistic practices and perspectives.
