Theatre Group “Emeis” revives “Interview”: A satirical look at power and submission

2 mins read

Theatre group Emeis reintroduces to the public Interview, the socio-political black comedy that, for five consecutive years, captivated audiences in Greece and abroad, reaching more than 6,000 spectators to date. Twelve years after its highly successful premiere, Interview remains more relevant than ever.

The play will be presented at OLVIO Theatre (67 Iera Odos & 7 Falaisias, Athens) from Friday, October 17, 2025, through Saturday, January 10, 2026, directed by Christos Thanos.

In Greece, it has been performed not only in theatres but also in detention centres, rehabilitation facilities, schools, and festivals. It was staged by the Hellenic Cultural Center of New York during the winter season of 2015, directed by Lito Triantafyllidou, and has since been produced by both professional and amateur groups in various Greek cities. The production received an honorary distinction from the UNESCO Club of Piraeus and Islands.

The previous performance run was held without a ticket fee, following the principle of free and voluntary contribution.

The play’s text was collectively created by all members of the group during rehearsals in the spring of 2013.

Synopsis

A job interview. Four candidates. One voice.
Humiliating questions and absurd tests lead to a process of tragicomic irrationality.

The idea: Power – The powerless.
The system – The citizens.
Capital – Consumers.
Employers – Employees.
The voice – The candidates.

Timeless relationships of love and hate, conflict and interdependence.
In an era when these opposing poles drift ever further apart, Emeis presents their tragicomic connection, exploring its boundaries with a spirit of demystification – stubbornly refusing gloom and misery.

Director’s Note – Christos Thanos

When we co-created Interview with the Emeis theatre group in 2013, at the heart of what was then called the “economic crisis,” we could never have imagined that, a decade later, the anxieties and questions expressed in the play would still lie at the centre of Greek society.

Professional insecurity, workplace cannibalism, the violation of rights, the arbitrariness of power, and the widening of social inequalities are, undeniably, defining features of today’s reality—both in Greece and beyond.

As artists, being part of this same reality, we have a duty-through the platform offered to us-to comment on and denounce injustice in every form, as loudly as we can, using the tools available to us.

In Interview, humour is our main ingredient. Guided by the principles of comedy, we aim-while steadfastly avoiding misery and defeatism-to provoke reflection or even awaken our audience to what is happening in their daily lives.

Personally, I am called to direct once again, after ten years, a play to which I am deeply and meaningfully connected-approaching it as though it were a text that had found its way into my hands for the first time in 2025.

My primary motivation for this decision is the artistic reunion with the beloved people who make up the Emeis theatre group.
After all, we do theatre mainly… for the company.

In collaboration with liminal, the performance includes SDH subtitles (for Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences) in Greek and English.
