“What a Wonderful World”: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong by The Storyville Ragtimers

Some artists transcend their era and become part of the soundtrack of our collective memory. More than half a century after his passing, Louis Armstrong remains one of those rare figures whose music continues to radiate joy, warmth and humanity across generations. On Friday, July 10, the Garden of the Megaron Athens Concert Hall will host an evening dedicated to the legendary jazz pioneer, as The Storyville Ragtimers present What a Wonderful World, a vibrant tribute celebrating the life and music of one of jazz’s most influential personalities.

Often referred to as “Mr. Jazz,” a title famously endorsed by Duke Ellington, Armstrong was far more than an exceptional trumpeter and singer. He was a transformative force who helped shape jazz into a global musical language. Emerging from the streets of New Orleans, he revolutionized the role of the soloist, introduced a new level of improvisational freedom and charisma, and brought jazz from local dance halls to concert stages around the world. Songs such as What a Wonderful World, Hello, Dolly!, When the Saints Go Marching In and La Vie En Rose remain timeless reminders of his extraordinary ability to connect with audiences through both virtuosity and emotion.

For this special concert, The Storyville Ragtimers invite audiences on a musical journey through the different chapters of Armstrong’s remarkable career, tracing his evolution from the early New Orleans years to the height of his international fame. Combining historical insight with infectious energy, the ensemble will bring to life the sounds, rhythms and spirit that defined an era and forever changed the course of popular music.

Founded in Athens in 2015, The Storyville Ragtimers have established themselves as one of Greece’s most dedicated ensembles devoted to the roots of jazz. Their name pays homage to Storyville, the legendary New Orleans district often associated with the birth of jazz, and reflects their deep appreciation for the city’s musical heritage, from the sounds of Basin Street and Mississippi riverboats to the brass bands that animated its parades and celebrations. Their repertoire draws inspiration from pioneers such as King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller and, naturally, Louis Armstrong himself.

Over the years, the group has performed at numerous festivals and venues across Greece, including the Ballroom Festival at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Melijazz, Round Midnight Blues Festival, Mykonos Art Festival and the Rematia Theatre. Their commitment to preserving and reinterpreting the sounds of early jazz has also been documented through two albums: The Storyville Ragtimers Live at Almagesti (2023) and High Society (2025).

Under the summer sky of the Megaron Garden, this concert promises more than a nostalgic tribute.
