“Public Secrets”: Probing the moment when the private turns public, when unspoken stories step out of the shadows

Unspoken truths, quiet revelations, and the fragile line between intimacy and exposure

The Breeder gallery presents the group exhibition Public Secrets, curated by Milovan Farronato, on view from June 21 to August 30. Featuring works by Maria Ioannou, Athina Kalogirou, Iva Lulashi, Olma, Paulina Olowska, Georgia Sagri, Maria Hassabi, Alexandra Christou, and Eleni Christodoulou, the show brings together a dynamic roster of artists who explore the slippery boundaries between visibility and concealment, intimacy and disclosure.

“What happens when we shift perspective and step off the beaten path?” asks Farronato. “When we drift away from what is expected, from what feels familiar?” Public Secrets unfolds in spaces where conventions are upended, where intimacy is disturbed, and secrets come to light. The exhibition probes the moment when the private turns public, when unspoken stories step out of the shadows — like the proverbial elephant entering the room: a truth impossible to ignore.

The works on view explore the tension between what is seen and what is hidden in plain sight. What does it mean to reveal a secret? How does the dynamic between individuals, communities, and societies shift once the concealed is exposed? And when we finally face what has been uncovered are we seeing the full picture, or just one side of the truth?

Staged in Athens, a city steeped in history and yet pulsing with contemporary life, the exhibition composes a subtle, layered narrative of unvoiced truths and deliberate silences. It invites viewers to confront what is usually overlooked, presenting not only the surface but also the unseen structures beneath.

Referencing the metaphor of “the snake in one’s bosom”, a symbol of both desire and danger, Public Secrets draws us into a world shaped by unspoken forces: from quiet introspection to the charged intensity of public discourse. As the artists guide us through their sinuous paths, a lingering question remains: what happens when the mask slips, when the veil is lifted? Can we ever return to a time before the secret was revealed? Or are we transformed, forever altered by what was once invisible?
