Yorgos Lanthimos reimagines Save the Green Planet! in a darkly comic alien abduction tale
Yorgos Lanthimos returns with BUGONIA, a darkly comic and wildly imaginative new film that blends science fiction, satire, and psychological tension. Starring long-time collaborator Emma Stone alongside Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbus, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, the film marks yet another bold departure for the Oscar-nominated Greek filmmaker.
Set in a world not unlike our own—but just strange enough to make you uneasy—BUGONIA follows two young conspiracy theorists who take matters into their own hands by kidnapping the powerful CEO of a global tech conglomerate. Convinced she is an alien sent to destroy the Earth, the duo’s mission spirals into an absurd and unsettling journey that blurs the lines between paranoia and prophecy, delusion and truth.

Inspired by the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, BUGONIA promises to be a high-concept, genre-defying story about fear, fanaticism, and what happens when the need for meaning tips over into madness. As with Lanthimos’ previous work, audiences can expect an unsettling blend of deadpan humor, moral ambiguity, and unexpected emotional resonance.
The teaser trailer offers only a glimpse—fragmented images, offbeat dialogue, and a mood that shifts rapidly from eerie to absurd. What is real? What is imagined? And who, exactly, is being saved?
