Patents of Hope: Stratis Voyatzis in “Tatlin’s Dream. Utopias. The Eternal Return”

From makeshift inventions to visions of utopia, Stratis Voyatzis presents Patent (a) at the group exhibition Tatlin’s Dream. Utopias. The Eternal Return at the Athens Conservatory.

For about a year, visual artist and anthropologist Stratis Voyatzis worked with inmates from fifteen different nationalities in Chios Prison, documenting their makeshift inventions and encouraging them-through creative workshops in drawing, writing, construction, and storytelling-to devise and build new ones.

Isolation, deprivation, the imposed “free time,” and the shortages that define this confined community compel prisoners to become inventive, to craft patents as survival practices. Each invention becomes a watermark of lives suspended in limbo, a kind of anti-monument to their spectral presence and the experience of incarceration. These creations function as “narrative condensers,” encapsulating the spatial coordinates of confinement. They convey an embodied condition of mutual vulnerability within an environment where both body and spirit are tested by mechanisms of suppression, containment, and control.

The inmates’ inventions propose a counter-mapping of the prison’s landscape, illuminating its invisible geographies, where an “improvised world” is enacted-a world brutally subjected to the disciplinary model of incarceration, yet quietly assembled, imagined, and narrated into existence. Within these walls, heterotopic spaces emerge, undermining conventions of perception and entrenched hierarchies. They are transformed into allegorical sketches that shift boundaries, legitimizing and giving value to inhabiting the state of exception.

Through these “humble assemblages,” an ethics of the insignificant arises-an ethics that privileges improvised gestures of life over the totalizing consumerism of “smart products” engineered by multinational corporations for market societies. Beyond carriers of lived experience and coded information, these inventions become manifestos through which prisoners articulate their voices, projecting their testimony beyond the prison walls.

Such improvised practices of construction evolve into innovative survival strategies, forms of resistance, and vessels of hope. They inspire those on the outside to conceive their own inventions in response to today’s climate crisis and the precarity of necropolitical capitalism.

From the utopias of antiquity and Plato’s Republic to cybernetic manifestos, technological optimism, and the dystopias of our age, the history of humanity has always been imbued with the quest for a better world.

The art exhibition “Tatlin’s Dream. Utopias. The Eternal Return”, curated by Dimitris Trikas, explores these trajectories of imagination and political thought, shedding light on how utopia-sometimes as hope, other times as threat-continues to inspire us to confront the present and envision the future.

Hosted at the Athens Conservatory, an emblematic “utopian” building by modernist architect Ioannis Despotopoulos, the exhibition is accompanied by an extensive public program of talks, performances, and artistic actions, in collaboration with universities and research laboratories.

The artists participating in the project “Tatlin’s Dream. Utopias. The Eternal Return” reflect on the utopias that give meaning to human lives-tracing a journey from the past and the wealth of human imagination and desire, to steampunk and cyberpunk, and on to the profound existential, ethical, and political dilemmas arising in the dawning age of the post-human.
