Historiograph in the Aegean through the lens of Konstantinos Sofikitis

Through the lens of Konstantinos Sofikitis, this exhibition becomes both testimony and remembrance, poetry and documentation. Moments of authentic life are transformed into images that invite us to reflect: Which parts of the past do we wish to preserve for the future? And how can we, as viewers, become participants in that preservation?
The Aegean is more than a landscape; it is its people. And their stories deserve to be heard.

A unique photographic journey titled “Historiograph in the Aegean” will be on view from June 1 to 3 at the Municipal Art Gallery of Piraeus, as part of the “Sea Days” cultural program organized by the Municipality of Piraeus.

Through 25 evocative works by acclaimed photographer Konstantinos Sofikitis, the exhibition brings to light untold stories from across the Aegean islands—stories of people whose lives are interwoven with endangered traditions, professions, and customs that risk disappearing.

This is not merely a photo exhibition; it is a multisensory narrative experience, blending image, word, sound, and oral testimony to create a living chronicle of emblematic island figures and cultural identity. With a deep respect for folk heritage, the exhibition becomes a vessel of memory, capturing the heartbeat of Aegean life through the lens of the artist, while honoring the human essence and cultural singularity of each island.

Konstantinos Sofikitis, an internationally recognized photographer and member of the LensCulture Society (Magnum), has collaborated with National Geographic, and his work has received major distinctions—most notably 1st Prize at the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards, as well as participation in the Venice Biennale the same year. In 2024, he was also selected to exhibit at the Havana Biennale with his project “marabou”.

Driven by a passion for travel and human-centered photography, Sofikitis continues to document the lives of people around the world, offering viewers an intimate window into places often overlooked, and voices often unheard.
