Queers Read Out Loud 4 Returns to Athens with an Evening Dedicated to Queer Nightlife

1 min read

On Thursday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m., Hyper Hypo hosts the fourth edition of Queers Read Out Loud, the annual event curated by Vassilia Kaga that explores queer experience through readings, poetry, storytelling, and performance.

This year’s edition, titled Queers Read Out Loud 4, unfolds around the theme “Legendary Queers of the Night”, accompanied by a photo projection celebrating iconic figures and memories from queer nightlife culture.

Bringing together voices from across the LGBTQI+ community, the evening invites participants to share texts, memories, confessions, and personal reflections inspired by nights that left a lasting mark. Stories emerge from dancefloors, bars, basements, hidden corners, and fleeting encounters, tracing the emotional landscape of queer nightlife where joy and despair, desire and belonging, often coexist.

The event examines nightlife not merely as entertainment, but as a vital cultural and social space. From the underground discos of the late 1960s to contemporary queer club nights, nightlife has long provided LGBTQI+ communities with opportunities to imagine alternative ways of living, loving, and gathering. For many, these spaces became places of first encounters, self-discovery, solidarity, and collective freedom.

At the same time, Queers Read Out Loud 4 reflects on the growing pressures faced by nightlife venues worldwide. Across cities such as New York and London, rising rents, gentrification, and commercial redevelopment have led to the closure of numerous clubs and queer venues that once served as important cultural refuges. The event raises questions about what is lost when these spaces disappear and who gets to shape the future of urban nightlife.

More than a reading event, Queers Read Out Loud 4 becomes an act of remembrance and resistance, celebrating communities that created homes where none existed and dancefloors that offered shelter, intimacy, and belonging.

As the curatorial statement poignantly concludes:

“Sometimes, your life is not saved by a politician. It’s saved by a DJ.”
