Evripidis & His Tragedies and Rhumba Club: A Queer Synth-Pop Odyssey on the Romantso Rooftop

2 mins read

Queer synth-pop stories, shimmering disco beats, and starlit Athenian skies

Under the fading summer sky, the Romantso rooftop becomes a dance floor one last time.
On Friday, September 12, two bold queer voices – Evripidis & His Tragedies and Rhumba Club – come together for an intimate night of synths, disco grooves, and emotional storytelling. A farewell ritual to the long Athenian summer, this is not just a concert – it’s a celebration of freedom, identity, and connection before the city exhales into autumn.

Evripidis & His Tragedies

The alter ego of Athenian artist Evripidis Sabatis, Evripidis & His Tragedies blends classical piano, queer storytelling, and dark humor, crafting confessional pop that dances on the fragile line between heartbreak and joy.

Though he began as a piano-based singer-songwriter and later recorded with a full band, in recent years Evripidis has embraced a synth-pop solo direction, fusing his love of Doo-Wop, girl groups, new wave, and indie pop with layered electronic soundscapes. His live performances combine humor, melancholy, raw energy, and disarming honesty in equal measure.

His latest release, the double album “Alegre Persona Triste”, celebrates 20 years of music-making, a journey that began in May 2005 with his first show in a small Barcelona bar – the city where he has lived ever since and is an active member of the local underground scene. Over the years, Evripidis has released six albums and several singles, performed at festivals like Primavera Sound, FIB, Indietracks, Indiefjord, Cologne Popfest, Synch, Agoraphobic Festival, Eurosonic Noorderslag, and shared stages with artists including John Grant, Jens Lekman, Peter Bjorn & John, Arab Strap, Nalyssa Green, The Ballet, Algora, Papa Topo, and Despoina Trichromi.

Currently, he’s promoting his latest album and working on new material – some of which he’s already bringing to the stage.

Rhumba Club

Rhumba Club is the alt-pop project of Tom Falle, based in London, delivering bold, danceable anthems infused with analogue synths, disco grooves, and queer narratives. Described by BBC 6 Music as “the queer renaissance man” and praised by Molchat Doma as “high-IQ synthpop,” his sound combines the controlled energy of Future Islands with the introspection of Perfume Genius.

Since his 2021 debut album “Welcome to the Rhumba Club”, Tom has built a dedicated “Clubbers” community and collaborated with brands like Hermès, Fendi, and Adidas. His second album, “Love Apokalypto” (2023), produced by Grammy nominee Mikko Gordon (IDLES, Arcade Fire, The Smile), features tracks such as “Perfect Queen” and “Beach Lizard”, earning acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music, Attitude, Wonderland, and Clash.

On stage, Rhumba Club delivers high-energy sets, part queer-disco euphoria, part cathartic release, having toured extensively across Europe – both headlining and supporting artists like Patrick Wolf, Molchat Doma, Will Butler + Sister Squares, and Miel de Montagne.

His latest single, “Odyssey”, was selected as BBC Introducing Track of the Week, marking the beginning of a new era. His third album, “HONCHO”, set for release in fall 2025 via Alter K, promises a cinematic, alternative disco sound, featuring collaborations with leading voices in the pop scene.

For fans of: Future Islands, Perfume Genius, Talking Heads, Donny Benét, Chromeo.
