September 18: A New All-Day Dining and Creative Spot in the Heart of Athens
On Kairi Street, just a few steps from the Varvakios Market, along a quiet pedestrian lane that still retains something of the charm of an old Athenian neighborhood, September 18 has recently opened its doors. The new restaurant that operates from day to night aspires to become a meeting point for those seeking simple yet refined flavours, a welcoming space, and a sense of familiarity within the vibrant rhythm of the city.
Behind the project is Nefeli Sahverdian, who comes from the world of strategic communication and creative marketing, having worked for years on major hospitality projects in Greece and abroad. Through this journey she encountered different cultures of hospitality and diverse ways of creating experiences around food, music and space. “I always felt that Athens offers countless options, yet something was missing,” she says. “What I was looking for was a sense of familiarity, comfort, and simple flavours that still carry character.”
September 18 was born precisely from that need.

Together with her partner Yiannis Tsachlis, who has long been active in the restaurant industry and now manages the venue, they created a space that operates from morning until late evening without fitting neatly into a single category. It is not simply a café, nor a conventional restaurant. Rather, it is a warm meeting point that gradually transforms as the day unfolds.
The culinary direction of the space was shaped by travels to Copenhagen, where Nefeli encountered a cuisine rooted in the simplicity of ingredients and precision in execution. She sought to bring that sensibility back to Athens, collaborating with executive chef Christos Chanias, with whom she developed the menu of September 18. “We wanted flavours to remain simple, yet leave something unique behind once you taste them,” she explains.
The menu follows this philosophy. It is neither extensive nor complicated. Instead, it consists of a small number of carefully curated dishes that evolve with the seasons. All ingredients come from small producers and farms across Greece. The cuisine does not adhere to a single national identity; its influences are international, yet the result remains balanced and authentic.

Breakfast features around ten dishes and deliberately avoids the expected brunch staples. Rather than the typical recipes found in hotels or cafés, the menu highlights flavour and the freshness of ingredients. Yogurt dishes, eggs and creative interpretations of simple combinations form its core.
As the day progresses, the space gradually shifts into a more evening-oriented rhythm. The dinner menu includes options for every preference: vegetarian dishes that can easily become vegan, as well as fish, beef and duck. Yet September 18 does not require guests to follow the “ritual” of a full dinner. One can simply stop by for a glass of wine and a cheese platter, or share a few small plates with friends.

The aesthetics of the space are equally central to the concept. Nefeli personally oversaw the design, aiming to introduce a different materiality from that found in many contemporary venues across the city. A colourful lacquered bar, a large bookshelf that will gradually fill with objects collected during travels and pieces of vintage design, along with small details that quietly tell stories, create an environment that feels warm and personal.
Art is also an organic part of the space. Even before the venue officially opened, September 18 hosted an exhibition featuring works by 27 artists within the unfinished site, attracting nearly two thousand visitors. In the future, its creators plan to continue this dialogue with the artistic scene by hosting sculptures, photography and small exhibitions that will continuously refresh the atmosphere of the space.

The name itself, September 18, carries a personal meaning for the owners, one they prefer not to disclose. Instead, they choose to leave its interpretation open to visitors. For some it may signify a new beginning, for others a birthday, an anniversary, or a meaningful memory.
After its first week of operation, the feedback from visitors has already been encouraging. Guests seem to embrace the space, the flavours, and the musical atmosphere shaped by Nefeli’s personal playlists, which move fluidly between jazz, rock and various musical influences.
Speaking about Athens today, Nefeli believes the city is experiencing a particularly creative moment. “I truly feel the city is at its best right now, and I see it through my work in marketing as well. Brands want to create beautiful, ambitious projects, but more importantly they seek meaningful storytelling behind them. Not just an activation event, but something that connects more deeply with what we are doing at that moment,” she says.

Although she believes the next five years will be positive for the city, she also acknowledges the challenges that come with rapid growth. “Of course, not everything is perfect. We see many ventures that simply follow a trend without enough research behind them. And when that happens, they often lack longevity because the right foundations were never truly established.”
In a city that continues to evolve and redefine itself, September 18 proposes something simple yet meaningful: a place where food, design and people meet naturally. A reminder that sometimes the most memorable experiences emerge from the balance between simplicity and attention to detail.
