The Deer Film Club: A New Home for Collective Cinema in the Heart of Athens -

This summer, Athens gains a new meeting point for film lovers. KINO Athens and TAF / the art foundation are launching The Deer Film Club, a new screening series that brings together independent cinema, contemporary storytelling, artistic dialogue and communal viewing experiences in one of the city’s most distinctive cultural spaces.

Hosted at TAF, the long-standing cultural hub tucked away in the historic center of Athens, the initiative aims to create more than a traditional screening programme. Conceived as an open platform for exchange, The Deer Film Club invites filmmakers, artists, students, cinephiles and curious audiences to engage with cinema as both an artistic medium and a social experience. Each gathering will combine carefully curated screenings with introductions, guest appearances and discussions, encouraging audiences to reflect on the stories unfolding on screen and the ideas they spark beyond it.

The programme embraces a broad spectrum of contemporary filmmaking, from independent productions and experimental works to documentaries, cult classics and emerging international voices. By creating a recurring space for collective viewing and conversation, KINO Athens and TAF seek to strengthen the city’s independent cultural ecosystem while fostering new connections between cinema and contemporary artistic practice.

The club opens on Wednesday, 10 June, with a programme of five internationally acclaimed short films that move between memory, desire, ecological anxiety and dreamlike states. Egyptian filmmaker Sameh Alaa’s S The Wolf follows a middle-aged man revisiting his turbulent adolescence through deeply personal reflections connected to his changing hair. In Soleil Gris, French director Camille Monnier presents an unsettling animated tale in which two teenagers confront the looming threat of environmental collapse while guarding a rundown motel.

The programme continues with Unleaded 95 by Emma Hutt and Tina Muffler, a bittersweet ensemble story unfolding around a bachelorette party and the tangled relationships of a small-town community. Spanish filmmaker Jaume Claret Muxar’s Our Room blurs the boundaries between dream and reality as a radio announcer drifts into sleep while listening to Chopin, transforming the spaces and colours around him. The evening concludes with Last Tropics by Greek filmmaker Thanassis Troboukis, a haunting story of a forgotten coastal village threatened by an environmental crisis, where three young fishermen resort to illegal dynamite fishing in a desperate attempt to survive. The screening will take place in the presence of the director and members of the creative team.

Through this collaboration, KINO Athens and TAF seek to strengthen the city’s independent cultural landscape while creating new connections between cinema and contemporary artistic practice. Future screening programmes, thematic sections and guest participants will be announced through the organisations’ official channels.

KINO Athens is an Athens-based film society dedicated to collective viewing experiences and the promotion of independent and contemporary cinema.
