THE DEER FILM CLUB Launches at T.A.F. with a New Programme of Independent Cinema

KINO Athens and T.A.F. / the art foundation are launching THE DEER FILM CLUB, a new screening series that transforms T.A.F. into a meeting point for cinema lovers, artists, filmmakers, and curious audiences in the heart of Athens.

Designed as more than a traditional film club, the initiative explores cinema as a collective cultural experience through a programme that spans independent films, cult classics, experimental works, documentaries, and contemporary international productions. Each screening will be accompanied by introductions, guest discussions, and open conversations, encouraging audiences to engage with film as both an artistic practice and a social dialogue.

By bringing together creators, students, cinephiles, and the wider public, THE DEER FILM CLUB aims to strengthen Athens’ independent cultural landscape while creating new connections between contemporary cinema and visual arts.

The programme opens on Wednesday, 24 June, with a curated selection of five short films from around the world: WASSUPKAYLEE by Sameh Alaa (USA, 2026), NO SKATE! by Guil Sela (France, 2025), CRITICAL CONDITION by Mila Zhluktenko (Germany, 2025), ONCE THERE WAS A STORM by Camille Anker (Switzerland, 2025), and the Greek short Prelude for a Supernova by Christos Artemiou (2025), presented in the presence of the director and creative team.

Future screenings are scheduled for 8 and 22 July, followed by 2 and 16 September.

The opening programme on Wednesday, 24 June brings together five award-winning and emerging short films that reflect the diversity of contemporary independent filmmaking.

Sameh Alaa’s WASSUPKAYLEE (USA, 2026) follows a teenage TikTok influencer navigating the pressures of online fame, belonging, and identity in the pursuit of viral success. In NO SKATE! (France, 2025), Guil Sela sets an unexpected encounter against the backdrop of Paris during the 2024 Olympic Games, turning an ordinary moment into an offbeat and humorous observation of contemporary urban life.

Inspired by the life of Ukrainian writer and journalist Lev Rebet, Mila Zhluktenko’s CRITICAL CONDITION (Germany, 2025) reflects on exile, memory, and the experience of the Ukrainian diaspora across generations. Camille Anker’s ONCE THERE WAS A STORM (Switzerland, 2025) unfolds as an intimate road journey in which a couple confronts the emotional distance growing between them.

The programme concludes with the Greek short film Prelude for a Supernova (2025) by Christos Artemiou, in which a ten-year-old girl embarks on a search for her missing mother while trying to complete a school assignment. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director and members of the film’s creative team.
