Rio de Janeiro, early 1970s. Brazil is in the grip of a military dictatorship. We meet the Paivas family: the father, Rubens, the mother, Eunice, and their five children. They live on the beach, in a house whose doors are always open to friends and family. The affection and humour they share is their own subtle form of resistance to the oppression that the whole country suffers.
One day they will suffer a violent and arbitrary act that will change their lives forever. When Eunice is forced to reinvent herself and create a new future for herself and her children. The moving story of this family, based on the memoirs of Marcelo Rubens Paiva, is also a reconstruction of an important part of the hidden history of Brazil.

Nominated for 3 Oscars (Best Picture, Best International Film, Best Actress for Fernanda Torres), Walter Salles’ new film I AM ALREADY HERE will be released in cinemas on 13th February.

The film is based on the best-selling memoir by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, in which his mother is suddenly faced with a new situation when her husband is arrested by the military regime in Brazil in 1971.

When I first read Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s “I’m Still Here”, I was deeply moved. For the first time, the story of the desaparecidos (disappeared), the people whose lives were taken by the Brazilian dictatorship, was told from the perspective of those left behind. In the experience of one woman – Eunice Paiva, a mother of five – there was both a story of how to live with loss and a mirror of the wound left on the nation.
It was also personal: I knew this family and was friends with Paiva’s children. Their home is etched in my memory. During the seven years we spent making I’m Still Here, life in Brazil came dangerously close to that past – which made it all the more urgent to tell this story
