International Contemporary Dance Festival ARC FOR DANCE 2026: Artists from 10 countries present 17 premieres inspired by #rupture

4 mins read

The International Contemporary Dance Festival ARC FOR DANCE, one of the most vibrant meeting points for contemporary dance in Greece and abroad, returns for its 17th edition from May 15 to 25. Drawing inspiration from #rupture, artists from 10 countries present 17 dance performances, in world or Greek premiere, hosted over 10 days at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre Maria Callas, Contemporary Theatre, other major cultural venues across Athens, as well as online.

This year, ARC17 directly confronts the challenges of the global condition. As 2026 unfolds amid fractures and divisions, an urgent question arises: how can we survive within widening gaps and face the end of the world as we once knew it? Can we move beyond rupture through dance, resist separation, and perhaps reshape the world in all its wild, living, unruly complexity, with us consciously present?

In its 17th edition, ARC presents performances that move from rupture to passage, from gap to crossing, from fracture to connection. It shares choreographic narratives of transcendence and engagement, bringing to the stage the unifying abundance of love and laughter, the liberating force of grief, and the pleasure of growing while thought is reborn, cutting across dividing lines and moving through cracks.

The festival’s main axis, MAIN FEST, takes place at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre “Maria Callas” (May 23–25), presenting six international and Greek productions that highlight the dynamism and polyphony of contemporary dance. The PRIME MOVERS section, at the Contemporary Theatre (May 15–17), looks toward the future, offering space to emerging artists to present five bold works. The ARChitects section expands the festival beyond the stage and opens dialogue with audiences, while ARC HOOD brings the festival into public space (Korai Square), strengthening connections between dance and other artistic and experiential forms through collaborations with institutions such as the French Institute of Greece.

Participating in ARC17: Lovísa Ósk Gunnarsdóttir (Iceland), Oulouy (Spain), Sofia Mavragani (Greece), Ilias Chatzigeorgiou (Greece), Anastasia Valsamaki (Greece), Les Idoles (France), Mufutau Yusuf (Ireland), Panzetti & Ticconi (Croatia, Italy), Production Xx (France), Solène Weinachter (France, UK), En–Knap (Slovenia), Ekin Tunçeli (Turkey), Stanislav Genadiev (Bulgaria), Violeta Vitanova (Bulgaria), Angelos Antonakos (Greece), Vasiliki Papapostolou (Greece), Despoina Sanida-Krezia (Greece).

Programme

PRIME MOVERS

The festival opens May 15–17 at the Contemporary Theatre with PRIME MOVERS, introducing a new generation of choreographers and works that move between transformation, conflict, humor, and dream, proposing new ways of thinking about coexistence in a constantly shifting world.

On Friday, May 15, Les Idoles with REFACE unfold a world of constant transformation, a play of illusions where nothing remains stable, while Despoina Sanida-Krezia, with Off, Off, creates a dynamic remix of identities where imitation and repetition become tools for redefining the self.

On Saturday, May 16, Panzetti & Ticconi with ALL’ARME explore the dual nature of collectivity as both force and threat in a time of intensifying tensions, while Vasiliki Papapostolou, with Lucid Absurdities, immerses us in a world where trauma and imagination merge and the absurd takes form.

On Sunday, May 17, Solène Weinachter with AFTER ALL approaches death with humor and sensitivity, proposing a perspective that treats it not as an end, but as another form of relationship.

ARChitects

The ARChitects section disrupts conventional ideas of how and where dance can be experienced. This year’s program leaves the theatre to inhabit virtual worlds and Greek modernist architecture, marking a rupture that opens new possibilities.

On Thursday, May 21, at the Dance Cultural Centre, Ekin Tunçeli’s heartquake approaches instability as a shared experience and solidarity as a force that holds us together, while Angelos Antonakos presents a work on the impossibility of separation and the limits of choice.

On Saturday, May 23, at the Athens Conservatoire, VR screenings of Saline Nebula by Stanislav Genadiev & Violeta Vitanova and Masterwork for Six Dancers 360 by En–Knap create a virtual environment where body and space are transformed, inviting audiences into new forms of experience and participation.

ARC Dialogues

On May 21 and 23, within ARChitects, ARC Dialogues opens a space for exchange and reflection, where creation meets discussion. Choreographer Chrysanthi Badeka moderates talks with artists, while VR screenings serve as a starting point for rethinking how we view and understand performance.

ARC HOOD

On May 22 and 23, ARC HOOD brings the festival into public space, engaging the accidental gaze and creating unexpected moments of connection. Through actions in the city center, at the French Institute and Korai Square, contemporary dance steps outside theatres into everyday life.

On May 22, the film En corps (The Last Dance) by Cédric Klapisch is screened, a story about the transformative power of dance. The following day, Mufutau Yusuf presents a site-specific work in public space, creating a near-meditative environment where ephemerality is traced through the body.

MAIN FEST

From May 23 to 25, the festival culminates at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre “Maria Callas”, focusing on themes central to human experience: fear, care, strength, identity, and the need to continue existing together.

On Friday, May 23, Sofia Mavragani’s SUPER A presents a female body moving between discipline and disobedience as a political act, while Lovísa Ósk Gunnarsdóttir’s When the Bleeding Stops approaches menopause as an experience of vulnerability, strength, and acceptance.

On Saturday, May 24, Anastasia Valsamaki’s feed me peace highlights care as an act of resistance and collective experience, while GUSH IS GREAT by Production Xx proposes a slower pace of life resisting contemporary frenzy.

On Sunday, May 25, Oulouy’s Black explores memory, violence, and the emancipation of the Black experience, while Ilias Chatzigeorgiou’s SCARED approaches fear as a shared, almost irrational yet deeply human condition.

ARC17 resists the violence of rupture by advocating difference without division, accessibility, and participation. Continuing its online presence, it will once again livestream selected performances.
