Michelle Gurevich returns to Athens for a special one-night concert on Wednesday, June 12, at the Garden Theatre, in an evening filled with romance and subtle, underground intensity.
Of Russian descent, Michelle is the daughter of a ballerina with the legendary Kirov Ballet and an engineer from Leningrad. She grew up listening to her parents’ collection of Soviet and European records from the 1970s. Her music evokes the spirit of Nico and Leonard Cohen, blending emotional depth, humor, and tragicomic storytelling. Her distinctive voice – often reminiscent of a darker, more intimate version of Tanita Tikaram – along with her poetic lyrics, shapes a deeply personal and recognizable style.
In 2016, Michelle, who was previously known as Chinawoman, chose to perform under her real name, which she also used for the reissues of her earlier albums.
With sold-out shows in cities such as Istanbul, Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, and of course Athens, Michelle has cultivated her own devoted audience – spanning Eastern Europe, Berlin’s queer scene, and listeners drawn to artists like Charles Aznavour, Zeki Müren, and Lucio Dalla.
While she is often joined by outstanding musicians during her live performances, her studio recordings remain largely solitary in spirit, allowing for a more direct and intimate connection with her listeners.
