Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s Landmark Installation Comes to Athens

ARCH presents Celebration? Realife Revisited. 1972–2000, the influential work by artist Marc Camille Chaimowicz that helped redefine the relationship between art and everyday life. First conceived in 1972, the project is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the transition from object-based art toward immersive environments that blur the boundaries between exhibition, performance and social experience.

Created in the wake of the cultural and political transformations of the late 1960s, Celebration? Realife Revisited. 1972–2000 emerged as a challenge to the dominant aesthetics of late modernism. Rejecting notions of artistic neutrality, austerity and rigid formalism, Chaimowicz embraced domesticity, decoration and human interaction as legitimate artistic materials.

The work was initially presented at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham before taking on a more performative dimension during the exhibition Three Life Situations at Gallery House in London later that same year. There, Chaimowicz inhabited the installation himself, transforming it into a living environment. Visitors encountered a seemingly abandoned party scene: everyday objects scattered throughout the space, shimmering surfaces, glitter, silver paint and atmospheric disco lighting. Tea was served, conversations unfolded, and the artist became host, participant and choreographer rather than a distant creator.

At ARCH, two vitrines installed within the library present archival documents, notes and ephemera from these original 1972 presentations, offering valuable insight into the conceptual development of the project.

The version on view today stems from its 2000 restaging, when the work was reintroduced without the artist’s physical presence. The addition of the word Revisited to the title acknowledges both the passage of time and the act of looking back, inviting audiences to reconsider the work through a contemporary lens.

More than an installation, Celebration? Realife Revisited. 1972–2000 functions as an open-ended situation where objects, atmosphere and human presence coexist. Its enduring relevance lies in its exploration of relational practices and its embrace of the domestic and decorative as spaces of artistic inquiry, themes that continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.

Born in postwar Paris, Chaimowicz has been the subject of major solo exhibitions internationally, including presentations at WIELS, Kunsthalle Bern, The Jewish Museum, Serpentine Galleries and Artists Space. His work has also featured in exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Tate Britain and numerous leading international institutions, cementing his position as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary art.
