“Surfing on the Art Waves”: Surfboards from Ikaria transformed into works of art

1 min read

“Surfing on the Art Waves”, is an exhibition of six artists, both established and emerging, who have transformed second-hand surfboards from Ikaria, each with its own history, into works of art. These boards, which have already “tamed” the waves, are now waves, now take on a new form with the aim of continuing their journey through their sale. The exhibition, combined with the historic wooden boat race, invites the public to discover art inspired by the sea and the past of Greek seamanship, while supporting important social initiatives.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to voluntary groups and innovative organisations to promote and preserve kayaks and sailing.

The exhibition will accompany the boat race “OCEANIDA”. It is an official race of traditional wooden sailing boats and dinghies on the coast of Attica, giving the citizens of our city the opportunity to get in touch with and admire these unique historic boats. “OCEANIDA” is celebrating its anniversary this year, marking five years of successful races and events dedicated to greek maritime heritage. The classic and traditional boat race “OKEANIDA 2024” will take place on the 19th and 20th of October 2024, in the sea area of Falirikos Bay.

The race is under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Sport, the Hellenic Sailing Federation, the Ministry of Tourism and the Hellenic Tourism Organisation.

The painted boards will be displayed in the windows of Athénée from Friday 18 October to Thursday 24 October.

Participating artists: Ioli Vlahaki, Filippos Theodoridis, Vassilis Mihopoulos, Christiana Economou, Cacao Rocks, Lil Koni.
