Palimpsests, sing digital collages printed on fabric, where past and present intertwine, where monumentality intertwines with street art, and where decay is reconsidered in relation to resilience
The Artisserie, a new artist-run space on Nikiou Street, presents its first exhibition entitled ‘Mish Mash – Athenian Palimpsests’, featuring works by Nikos Mainaris.
In the exhibition ‘Mish Mash – Athenian Palimpsests’, Nikos Mainaris highlights the contradictions of the Athenian landscape through a multi-dimensional narrative that explores composition and deconstruction. Using digital collages printed on fabric, he creates palimpsests where past and present intertwine, where monumentality intertwines with street art, and where decay is reconsidered in relation to resilience.
Through his gaze, Athens becomes a living organism, a place where the social tensions and transformations of the city are reflected in ever-changing layers. Graffiti, posters and traces of abandoned buildings become material for the study of the urban environment, transforming signs of supposed decay into fields of creative analysis.
They also comment on critical issues such as gentrification and tourism, which are turning the city into a theme park and marginalising its residents. The works capture these changes and raise questions: What is the role of the city? Is it a living organism or a surface for consumption? Is the city an urban fabric or a living space? Is it a habitat, a living space or a living space? Cultural identity, alienation, marginalisation and socio-economic inequalities are condensed into complex layers.

The use of fabric as a medium emphasises both the vulnerability and the hidden persistence of the city. The exhibition is hosted on Nikiou Street, a street where textile warehouses still operate, recalling the area’s long history as a centre for textile merchants and a victim of aggressive tourism development that has turned the shops into Airbnb accommodation. The exhibition space is not just a backdrop, but part of the narrative itself, capturing the conflict between the preservation of historical identity and the pressures of urban transformation.
The works in the exhibition map the complexity of the city’s landscape, integrating different temporal and social components into a dynamic narrative. “Mish Mash” encourages the audience to look at Athens from a new perspective, highlighting its contradictions and inviting reflection on its constant evolution. Criticism of uncontrolled tourism development coexists with the emergence of creative initiatives and unpredictable alliances that rethink the relationship between people and urban space. Through layers of memory, experience and imagination, the exhibition illuminates the resilience of the city and the possibilities of its reconstruction.
A few words about Nikos Mainaris and The Artisserie
Nikos Mainaris decided to create the Artisserie after studying Graphic Design, Fine Art Concept and Clinical Art Therapy, and after 20 years as Art Director at the Koukoutsi Graphic Shop. The space focuses on the art of weaving, taking inspiration from the neighbourhood, which is home to fabric shops, small crafts and artisans. The aim is to shed light on these traditional methods in the present day, providing a platform for collaboration with individuals and institutions who wish to present artistic creations based on experimental materials and practices.
Linking the past with the present, the Artisserie is a space for innovation, highlighting the link between art and craft.
