“Electrified Echoes” explores themes of change and transformation and reflects on Stamkopoulos’ artistic career, which is inextricably linked to Berlin’s rich cultural and musical environment. The exhibition runs until 22 March 2025.
George Stamkopoulos has spent most of his adult life in Berlin, where he developed his career as a painter. Alongside his painting, he creates visual effects for DJs performing at the iconic Watergate club, a landmark in Berlin’s nightlife history. This parallel activity not only influenced his creative process, but also provided him with a space of freedom, solidarity and unbridled creativity that left an indelible mark on his work.
Founded after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Watergate embodied the values of non-hierarchical power, anti-racist and anti-war movements, as well as a commitment to queer, feminist and unconventional ideas. Recently, the club closed its doors for good, marking the end of an era – not only for Berlin’s cultural scene, but also for Stamkopoulos, whose life and work were deeply intertwined with the space.
The new body of work presented in ‘Electrified Echoes’ is imbued with a sense of this loss, which also serves as a point of departure. Bold, impetuous and powerful, Stamkopoulos’s paintings capture the vitality of music, the ritualistic intensity of the club experience and the global role of such spaces as refuges for community, creativity and alternative forms of relationship.

Through the presentation of earlier works, the exhibition also offers a rare opportunity to observe the evolution of the artist’s creative process over the past two decades. Inspired by the abstract and refined colours found in music and nature, Stamkopoulos creates works that eloquently and uniquely capture the transformative beauty of the world around us. His technique begins with the application of a masking material to the canvas, followed by a gestural approach to painting. After this first layer has dried, he alternates the use of masking material with oils, creating a layered process of unpredictable shapes and areas of colourlessness. In the final stage he scrapes the surface of the canvas, adding depth and complexity to his dynamic and embossed works. In the final stage, he scrapes the surface of the canvas, adding depth and complexity to his dynamic and relief works. This method alludes to the transformative process of forming, resulting in paintings that are both visually and stylistically rich.
Electrified Echoes offers a moving look at the intersection of personal and collective history, capturing both the ephemeral nature of cultural experience and the timeless power of art. Through this exhibition, Stamkopoulos invites viewers to experience the pulse of Berlin’s vibrant scene, while encouraging them to reflect on the larger forces of change, loss and rebirth. It is a celebration of artistic resilience, where memory and imagination converge to forge new paths into the future.
