“Confusions”: A new exhibition by Dimitris Halatsis

Confusions,” uses various artistic mediums—paintings, drawings, objects, performances, and texts—to explore this societal disarray

Pavlov’s dog, trained to differentiate a circle from a semicircle by receiving food as a reward, serves as a metaphor for modern Western society. In Pavlov’s experiment, as the semicircle shrank to resemble a circle, the dog became increasingly confused, unable to distinguish between the two shapes. It grew agitated, shaking and barking in response. This “ambivalence” towards the stimuli led to neurosis, triggered by the gradual reduction in the difference between the shapes. As the stimuli became more alike, the dog’s behavior shifted dramatically, and its confusion and neurotic state persisted long after the experiment ended.

Capitalism appears to be in its final crisis, converging with itself and leading to the near-total objectification of individuals. The boundaries between work and life have dissolved, with time becoming chaotic and fluid as capital infiltrates even our sleep. The human subject has become so synchronized with market dynamics that a world indistinguishable from itself is emerging, erasing any division between work and leisure. In this new reality, everything feels identical, fostering a pervasive confusion that fuels a collective social neurosis.

In today’s context of capitalism’s profound disarray, the neurotic narcissist has become its emblem. Contemporary culture presents an illusion of diversity and multiple identities, yet we are witnessing the opposite—an erosion of individuality and uniqueness. People are increasingly reduced to mere data points, constantly monitored and archived. This disorientation fragments collective experience, creating a landscape of isolated individuals, bound only by hollow narcissistic identities, which strips away any sense of depth or meaning. In this fragmented environment, class divisions within Western cities are further exacerbated.

Dimitris Halatsis’ solo exhibition, “Confusions,” uses various artistic mediums—paintings, drawings, objects, performances, and texts—to explore this societal disarray. Through these visual expressions, he aims to reconstruct the confused social landscape and provide reflections on issues surrounding the commodification and spiritual depletion of the Western world.
