Athens Photo World 2026: Athens Once Again Becomes an Open-Air Photographic Stage with Two Major Outdoor Exhibitions and a Public Party

Athens Photo World returns this year to the public spaces of Athens with two major outdoor exhibitions and an open public party in the city center.

Starting on 29 May, Athens Photo World once again meets the public in the streets of Athens, presenting two major outdoor exhibitions that engage with history, sport, and contemporary Greek identity.

For yet another year, the fences of the National Garden and the Athens Concert Hall are transformed into open-air galleries accessible to everyone, inviting both residents and visitors of the city to experience photography within the urban landscape.

Athens Photo World presents, from 29 May to 31 July at the National Garden, the exhibition “The History of the World Cup in Images / Associated Press”, a major outdoor retrospective on the history of the world’s greatest football tournament, held alongside this year’s FIFA World Cup.

The exhibition features 121 iconic photographs from the archive of the international news agency Associated Press, capturing historic moments from 1950 to the present day – images engraved in the collective memory of millions of football fans worldwide.

Along Vasilissis Sofias and Amalias avenues, 48 large-scale frames highlight emotion, intensity, victory, defeat, and moments that transcended sport to become global cultural symbols. An open experience of image and memory, available to every passerby throughout the day and night.

With the opening of the National Garden exhibition, Athens Photo World’s social media channels will also launch, from 29 May, a special series dedicated to the “small stories of the World Cups.” Sports journalist Christos Sotirakopoulos will share daily unique narratives inspired by the iconic Associated Press photographs, shedding light on unknown moments, behind-the-scenes stories, and human experiences behind the world’s greatest football tournament.

At the same time, Athens Photo World returns for its seventh consecutive year to the fence of the Athens Concert Hall, presenting from 29 May to 31 August 2026 the photographic exhibition “Mitos, the Thread of Greece” by Michalis Pappas.

Through 13 selected images, Greek tradition is reintroduced through a contemporary photographic perspective. Traditional costumes are “brought to life” on present-day figures, creating a poetic narrative about continuity, transformation, and the timelessness of cultural heritage.

The long-standing collaboration between Athens Photo World and the Municipality of Athens continues to evolve, transforming photography into a living public experience that connects residents, visitors, and diverse communities through the power of the image.

Athens Photo World celebrates the opening of its summer exhibitions for 2026 with a public party, organized in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival of the Municipality of Athens and Athens Cocktails, on Saturday, 30 May 2026, at 19:00, at STOA Culture, the emblematic cultural venue in the heart of Athens.

The evening will feature digital projections of the Athens Photo World outdoor exhibitions presented at the National Garden and the Athens Concert Hall, music by DJs Tolis Q and Marthe, and Jose Cuervo cocktails curated by A for Athens Bar, while also marking the reopening of one of the city center’s most distinctive cultural venues.
