Angelos Razis: Painting the Invisible in a Retrospective Exhibition at OT216

The Municipality of Iraklio Attica organizes and presents a retrospective exhibition of painter Angelos Razis at the municipal multi-purpose venue OT216 (corner of Konstantinou Palaiologou & Eleftheriou Venizelou), from March 20 to 31, under the production direction and curatorship of art historian Konstantinos Th. Spyropoulos.

As the curator notes:
“What makes Angelos Razis’ works unique is the distinctive way in which they are created, through which he seeks to capture not only the visible but also the invisible aspects of the reality that surrounds him. In this way, he distills the subtle essence of what he sees, rendering the stimuli of the natural world as a tangible domain of fixed, immovable magnitudes, which, although referring to the visible world, contains elusive elements that imbue it with imaginary and symbolic qualities. His artistic production can be broadly divided into three main thematic units: provincial cafés, still lifes, and threshold spaces. A common feature across all of them is what I would call a ‘metaphysics of the everyday’, through which the artist engages on a deeper level to reveal the ‘heartbeat’ of human existence that emerges from its very simplicity.”

A few words about the artist

Angelos Razis was born in Thessaloniki in 1943. From 1968 to 1973, he studied painting and printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Nikos Nikolaou and Kostas Grammatopoulos. Between 1973 and 1980, he lived in Molyvos (Mythymna) on the island of Lesvos, where he worked in icon painting, and later in the medieval city of Troyes in France, where he studied Western art. His exhibitions have taken him to Germany, Cyprus, Belgium, France, and other countries around the world. His works are held in private and public collections in Greece and abroad.
