Alekos Fassianos: “Beneath the summer sun” opens in Corfu

1 min read

The poetic world of Greek painter Alekos Fassianos comes to life this summer at the Corfu Annex of the National Gallery with the exhibition Alekos Fassianos: Beneath the Summer Sun, on view from 26 June 2026 to 11 January 2027.

Drawing inspiration from everyday life, memory, love, light, and the simple moments that shape human experience, Fassianos developed a distinctive visual language that remains instantly recognizable. The exhibition brings together 46 works, including paintings, acrylics, and prints, offering visitors a representative overview of nearly six decades of artistic production. The works are drawn from the collections of the National Gallery, the Alekos Fassianos Museum, and private collections.

As Fassianos once remarked: “I paint what touches me, what I feel around life, quite simply. Golden horsemen who now live only in our dreams, languid women, lovers in love… I love the light that caresses faces. What poetry there is in a body bathed in it!”

Through vivid colours, stylised figures, and scenes infused with warmth and nostalgia, the exhibition highlights both the consistency and evolution of the artist’s oeuvre, as well as his unique ability to transform the seemingly ordinary into images filled with vitality and emotion. It offers audiences an opportunity to engage closely with the work of one of Greece’s most celebrated contemporary artists and experience firsthand the enduring power of his visual storytelling.

The exhibition is curated by Efi Agathonikou, Director of Collections and Museological Programming at the National Gallery, while the artistic programme of the institution is overseen by Syrago Tsiara.
