A summer stop in the world of Maria Callas

1 min read

Special Friday ticket offers, the beloved La Mia Maria creative workshop for children and adults, and guided tours in both Greek and English make up the summer programme of the Maria Callas Museum of the City of Athens, inviting both locals and visitors to discover one of the city’s most inspiring cultural destinations.

The Maria Callas Museum is the first museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the legendary soprano and the only museum in Athens devoted to her life and legacy. Combining the perspectives of a biographical museum and a performing arts museum, it offers visitors an immersive journey into the artistic universe of one of opera’s greatest icons.

Rather than focusing solely on the myths surrounding Maria Callas, the museum explores the artistry, discipline, and extraordinary talent that made her one of the most influential opera singers of all time. Through its permanent exhibition, it seeks to reveal the essence of her artistic identity, inspire new generations, preserve and interpret her legacy, and promote music education and research for audiences of all ages.

A collection that brings Maria Callas to life

The City of Athens began building its Maria Callas Collection in 2000, following the acquisition of the first objects at an international auction in Paris. Since then, the collection has continued to grow through donations and long-term loans, and today includes more than 1,000 items related to the celebrated soprano.

Highlights include Callas’ personal photograph album dating from 1947–1959, stage costumes, clothing, handwritten letters, posters and performance programmes, telegrams, personal belongings, records and CDs, books, magazines, and works of art. Together, these objects offer a rare and intimate portrait of the woman behind the legendary voice.

Throughout the summer, visitors can also enjoy English-language guided tours and the museum’s family-friendly La Mia Maria creative programme, making it an ideal cultural stop for music lovers, families, and anyone wishing to discover Maria Callas beyond the stage.
