2023 Eleusis welcomes September with the 49th Aeschylia Festival 2024, one of the longest running festivals in Greece, which this year completes 49 years. The curtain rises on Friday 30 August with the concert titled My Ennio Morricone, performed by Stavros Lantsias and his quartet at the archaeological site of Elefsina. The acclaimed Cypriot pianist and composer will present his highly anticipated latest album, My Ennio Morricone, offering a glimpse into the musical universe of his favorite composer, featuring unforgettable melodies that have scored iconic films such as Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon a Time in the West and many others, through inventive arrangements and inspired performances by gifted soloists.

On Sunday 1 September the programme continues at the Old Oil Mill Factory Amphitheatre, where the National Theatre will present Euripides’ “Bacchae” directed by Thanos Papakonstantinou. This play, characterized by immense internal power, also reflects the poet’s interest in mysticism and ecstasy. The central dramatic themes of the tragedy include the potential of the soul, human virtue, self-awareness, wisdom and delusion, reason and irrationality, all of which are portrayed through the conflict between man and God – a conflict that leads to the tragic confrontation of the drama.

On Friday 20 September the event “The children of Elefsina still play marbles” will take place at the Old Oil Mill Factory featuringlocal artists. Specifically, there will be a concert by musicians from Elefsina, covering all genres of music—from classical, art music, rock, and traditional to folk, rap, and techno. Simultaneously, short films directed by Eleusinian artists will be shown, along with texts curated by local writers.
