Open-Air Cinema at Epi Kolono: Free Screenings in the Theater’s Courtyard

This summer, the Epi Kolono Theater launches a new, experimental initiative: it transforms its courtyard into an open-air cinema, creating a unique cinematic experience in the heart of the city. The pilot program kicks off with two film screenings, on Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 19.

In the old school courtyard of Epi Kolono, with a newly arranged layout and a versatile screen installation, films that have been celebrated and beloved around the world will be shown. A summer cinema curated by people of the theater, for cinephile audiences seeking independent film screenings.

The NAMA Group has previously staged McDonagh’s “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” co-produced “The Pillowman” currently on stage at the Contemporary Theater, and will soon announce a new production at Epi Kolono based on a work by Cormac McCarthy.

On Friday, July 11, the opening night of the summer cinema at Epi Kolono, actor Antonis Kafetzopoulos will introduce the film, while Giorgos Chatzinikolaou will briefly speak about the identity of this new endeavor. “We chose these two films for the pilot launch this July to mark the philosophy and aesthetics of this new venture,” says Giorgos Chatzinikolaou, Artistic Director of Epi Kolono Theater.

“No Country for Old Men”

After a drug deal goes wrong on the Texas–Mexico border, a working-class man discovers two million dollars in the desert and soon becomes the target of a relentless killer.

This is an atmospheric film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel, directed by the Coen brothers. The film stars Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role.

Released in 2007, the film received critical and audience acclaim, winning four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor), two BAFTAs, and numerous other honors. It has since been deemed “culturally, aesthetically, and historically significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

When the investigation into her daughter’s rape and murder stalls, a mother takes action to challenge the inaction of the local authorities: she rents three roadside billboards near the town and publicly condemns the police, setting the entire community against her.

Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the film is noted for the performances of Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson.

It won two Academy Awards (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor), four Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Actress – Drama, and Best Supporting Actor), and five BAFTAs, among many other awards.
