Open-air cinema returns to the rooftop of EMΣT | National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens with CineFIX, featuring landmark films, documentaries, and special screenings under the Athenian sky throughout summer 2026
Summer in Athens has its own cinematic magic. And if there is one place where the experience of open-air cinema meets contemporary art, the city, and culture, it is the rooftop of the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens. Once again this year, EMST transforms its terrace into one of the most atmospheric open-air cinemas in Athens, CineFIX, offering screenings of films, documentaries, and audiovisual works against a panoramic backdrop of the city and the Acropolis.
The program launches on May 28 and will continue on a weekly basis throughout the summer, turning Athenian nights into an open invitation to cinema and contemporary culture.
The opening screening features one of the landmark documentaries of European cinema. On Thursday, May 28 at 21:00, EMST presents Le joli mai (The Lovely Month of May) by Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme. Filmed in Paris in May 1962, shortly after the end of the Algerian War, the documentary unfolds through conversations with workers, students, intellectuals, and passersby, creating a multilayered portrait of French society at a moment of transition. More than a documentary, it becomes a cinematic essay on everyday life, political consciousness, and the emotional atmosphere of an era.
The film will be screened in French with Greek subtitles.
On Friday, June 5, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens joins the celebrations for Athens Pride 2026 with an evening dedicated to the history and visibility of the LGBTQI+ community.
The program begins at 20:30 with the discussion “A Plus Century: The Journey of the LGBTQI+ Community from Magnus Hirschfeld to Today”, featuring Kostas Giannakopoulos and Grigoris Valliantos, moderated by Phoebus Sakalis. The discussion will be held in Greek.
At 21:15, the evening continues with screenings of Morning Glory (2022) by Eva Stefani and The Einstein of Sex: Life and Work of Dr. M. Hirschfeld (1999) by Rosa von Praunheim, a film dedicated to the pioneering sexologist and LGBTQI+ activist Magnus Hirschfeld.
High above the city lights, CineFIX once again transforms the EMST rooftop into a meeting point for cinema, ideas, and the summer energy of Athens.
