Schütte has created a series of new works that reflect his personal artistic and political perspective

Gallery Bernier/Eliades presents the 8th solo exhibition of Thomas Schütte in Athens, immediately after his retrospective at MoMA in New York.

Thomas Schütte uses a wide range of media, materials and techniques, an element that makes his work flexible and multidimensional. For this exhibition, Schütte has created a series of new works that reflect his personal artistic and political perspective. Schütte’s work is often characterised by hybridity and contradiction, raising questions about the structure and nature of art. Inspired by ancient Greek and Roman statuary, early modern sculpture and post-modern architecture, his practice has moved away from minimalism and conceptual art in search of new narrative forms and figures. Through the use of different materials, his work maintains an ironic and critical dimension while remaining open to interpretation. He believes that form, material and colour have their own language that cannot be translated. Schütte’s work focuses on man in his socio-political context and the place of the artist and art in everyday life.

Thomas Schütte was born in Germany in 1954 and studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He lives and works in Düsseldorf. He has received numerous awards, including the Düsseldorf Prize (2010), the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (2005), the Kurt Schwitters Art Prize of the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung (1998) and the Art Prize of the City of Wolfsburg (1996). His works are in major international collections, including the ARC Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; the Clark Art Institute, Massachusetts; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the MoMA, New York; the Pinault Collection – Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Venice; and the Tate Modern, London. Thomas Schütte has recently had solo exhibitions at MoMA, New York, USA (2024); Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin, Germany (2021); Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2016); Fondation Beyeler, Riehen, Switzerland (2013-2014); Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (2013); and Serpentine Gallery, London, UK (2012).
