Birds of Passage: CYPHER transforms a Santorini home into a contemporary art exhibition

This summer, contemporary art finds an unexpected home in Santorini, not inside a white-cube gallery, but within a residential complex overlooking the island’s volcanic landscape.

From 6 August to 20 September 2026, independent Athens-based gallery CYPHER presents Birds of Passage, a group exhibition that temporarily transforms Hiraeth Santorini in Megalochori into a space where architecture, memory and painting converge. Bringing together nine emerging artists, the exhibition explores the idea of dwelling—not as a fixed place to live, but as a constantly evolving relationship between people, space and experience.

Rather than treating the venue as a neutral backdrop, curator Isavella Kladaki embraces the house itself as an active participant in the exhibition. During the show’s run, the three independent residences that make up Hiraeth Santorini temporarily suspend their everyday function. Instead of welcoming overnight guests, they become inhabited by paintings, creating a setting where the boundaries between private and public life, domestic intimacy and exhibition-making become deliberately blurred.

The exhibition begins with a series of transitions: from Athens to Santorini, from gallery to home, and from the artist’s studio to the exhibition space. Through these shifts, Birds of Passage considers how artworks, architecture and viewers collectively produce a temporary place of encounter. Rather than presenting dwelling as permanence or ownership, it proposes it as an ongoing process shaped by memory, movement and human relationships.

Participating artists Ioannis Aristotelous, Dimosthenis Barbas (Barba Dee), Elena-Dimitra Chantzis, Dimitris Efeoglou, Panagiotis Kefalas, Owen Osunde, Yorgos Papafigos, Katerina Papazissi and Eleni Tomadaki each contribute distinct visual languages that unfold throughout the domestic setting. Their works also enter into dialogue with selected pieces already belonging to the house’s permanent collection, allowing traces of the building’s own history to become part of the exhibition narrative.

Painting ultimately becomes the medium through which these layered relationships are made visible. Physical space, pictorial space and psychological space overlap, creating an environment that exists only through the interaction between artwork, site and visitor.

Founded in Athens in 2024, CYPHER has quickly established itself as a platform for emerging contemporary artists, presenting exhibitions and site-specific projects that encourage dialogue between artistic practice and its wider social and cultural contexts.

About the artists

The exhibition brings together nine emerging and mid-career artists whose practices reflect the diversity of contemporary Greek painting and expanded visual culture.

• Ioannis Aristotelous (Kyoto) explores light, memory and liminal states between presence and absence through painting and installation.
• Dimosthenis Barbas (Barba Dee) moves between oil painting, street art and public-space interventions, while also working with printmaking, typography and installation.
• Dimitris Efeoglou is an Athens School of Fine Arts graduate whose work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major public and private collections, including the Luciano Benetton Collection.
• Panagiotis Kefalas examines human relationships, melancholy and social isolation through figurative painting informed by art history and contemporary life.
• Owen Osunde explores memory and identity through figurative painting, drawing on personal archives and his Nigerian, Sri Lankan and Greek heritage.
• Yorgos Papafigos works across painting and moving image, exhibiting internationally at institutions including Whitechapel Gallery, WRO Media Art Biennale and ONASSIS ONX.
• Katerina Papazissi combines painting, sculpture and installation in a practice that investigates the body through colour, movement and material transformation.
• Eleni Tomadaki works with painting, video, sound and text, creating poetic explorations of language, perception and presence.
• Elena Demetria Chantzis uses everyday domestic objects as painting supports, drawing on her background in architecture to investigate contemporary ways of living.
