Athens Epidaurus Festival and SNFCC Present: MONOM’s Pioneering 4DSOUND Installation Debuts in Greece

For the first time in Greece, the Berlin-based spatial sound studio MONOM presents a series of works created specifically for the 4DSOUND system.

The Athens Epidaurus Festival and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) join forces to present a groundbreaking sound installation that fuses technology and the arts, curated by Stavros Gasparatos, from June 6 to 12 at the SNFCC Dome.

For the first time in Greece, the Berlin-based sound spatialization studio MONOM, a global pioneer in the use of the 4DSOUND system, will present a series of works created specifically for this medium.

Inside the SNFCC Dome, MONOM will install a large-scale 4DSOUND system, consisting of 48 omnidirectional speakers and 9 subwoofers. This innovative setup will transform the space into a holographic acoustic environment, where sound embraces the audience from all directions, showcasing the power of multidimensional audio to create listening communities and transform our perception of music.

Sound installations that invite visitors to explore immersive worlds and dive into a universally expanded field of listening, where sound becomes space, movement, and emotion.

A sonic universe for all ages

The new work for children and adults, “The King of Grey and Silence” by Sofiana Theofanous (recipient of the 2020 State Award for Children’s Theatre Play), written especially for the Dome installation and produced by MONOM studio, invites audiences into a multidimensional narrative experience. It is an allegorical tale about the power of art, hope, and imagination for the whole family, where words and sounds come alive and carry us into magical landscapes, narrated by Alexandra Lerta.

Composed and spatially designed by MONOM and collaborators, “The Elements – Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, and Aether” offers a purely sonic experience that explores our deep connection to the forces of nature.

The MONOM Archive Show presents four works created specifically for the 4DSOUND system. The works by Suzanne Ciani, Evita Manji, Cinna Peyghamy, and Andrea Belfi create a multidimensional sonic landscape of technological and artistic innovation.

Live sensory experiences

The experience will culminate in two live concerts, specially designed for the 4DSOUND system.

On Tuesday, June 10, Spyros Polychronopoulos invites us to an immersive multichannel performance where the boundaries between natural and synthetic sound blur. Fragmented soundscapes, percussive textures, drones from strings, and evolving modular synth layers collide and dissolve through various phases of digital processing. Moving across the extremes of the audible spectrum – from piercing high frequencies to dense, tactile lows – “Nearfield” invites listeners into an intimate auditory landscape where attention magnifies the smallest gestures and hidden sonic traces pulse just beneath the surface.

On Thursday, June 12, Ben Frost – known for collaborations with Björk, Tim Hecker, Colin Stetson, and Swans – will present a brand-new work designed specifically for the 4DSOUND system. Constantly pushing sonic boundaries and known for his intense and uncompromising palette, Frost moves across minimal, experimental, industrial, and noise genres. In this piece, he explores the very architecture of sound, sculpting an environment that envelops the listener in shifting textures, dynamic intensity, and spatial waves.
