Some of the best options for a plant based meal that will entice even the most devoted of carnivores.
The vegan food scene in Athens has come a long way in the past decade or so, with many interesting dining options popping up one after the other. From slow-cooked meals at restaurants like ΥΙ and Mama Tierra to sweet indulgences at bakeries like Holy Llama and Vegan Fairies, and coffee delights at Avit Cafe there is finally something out there for everyone.
Even if you are not a vegan, it is worth exploring some of these spots, that are somewhat different than what most of us are used to, but equally -if not more-, delicious. So, next time you want to eat out, forgo the souvlaki, grilled picanha or lamb chops and opt for the cheese made out of cashews, the chickpea patties and the vegan moussaka and soutzoukakia. We promise, you ‘ll be going back for more.
YI – Positive vibes

In Glyfada, but somewhat out of the way, a few blocks from the busy center, YI has been quietly, but consistently catering to its educated clientele some of whom travel from afar to taste its unique menu. Everything here is hand-made, mostly organic and healthy -they make their own almond milk. Spreads and cheese that is made from cashews and almonds, tortillas from apples and seeds, hot and cold soups, zucchini noodles, and a wide selection of desserts (try the snickers and tiramisu pastries), cookies and snacks. This beautiful restaurant with the positive vibe -a favorite among chefs-, will welcome you from morning -with pancakes-, till night.
Mama Tierra – Mother earth

Included in the Michelin guide, Mama Tierra owes most of its success to its Indian chef, Polash Alam. Influenced by the dishes of his childhood that are enhanced by his experience from flavors around the world, he has managed to serve traditional meat dishes, like moussaka and soutzoukakia, with plant based ingredients and people love it. The success of the first restaurant in Exarchia led to the opening of another, serving street food, next to the Acropolis museum. Souvlaki with mushrooms instead of pork, hearty “cheeseburgers” without the cheese or the beef, bao buns and more. I would also try the vegan baklava.
Holy Llama – All day brunch

How would you like to try a vegan croissant? A vegan, but decadent, birthday cake? A warm pie or tart with plant based ingredients? All of the above, and lots more are to be found at the first vegan bakery in Greece. Serving brunch all day long and a light lunch, this cool place, that also has its own farm from where it sources many of the ingredients used in the kitchen, allows you to enjoy your favorite treats guilt free.
Avit Cafe – Daily pleasures

Focusing not only on the food but also on its coffee, which is sourced from plantations all over the world, this all day cafe restaurant freshly grounds the precious beans on the spot, to keep all of their aroma and flavor. Enjoy everything from simple porridge and yogurt with fruit to panini, burgers and raw cheesecake.
Vegan Fairies – Pure imagination

The most beautiful raw vegan cakes you can find, plus delicious sweet snacks like macarons, donuts, “Twix” and “Bounty” bars etc. Vegan Fairies is the place for those who have a sweet tooth but want to stick to a healthy diet. Most of the products are made to order so be sure to give them a call if you want something specific. Otherwise, simply pop by and take your chances with what is on display.
