From 12 to 19 August 2026, the island of Lesvos will once again become an international meeting point for chamber music as the 12th Molyvos International Music Festival unfolds across some of the island’s most remarkable historical landmarks. This year’s edition invites audiences to reflect on the Aristotelian concept of “Eudaimonia”, proposing a deeper understanding of happiness rooted in virtue, balance, and a meaningful life rather than fleeting pleasure.
Artistic directors Danae and Kiveli Dörken have shaped the festival around this philosophical idea, transforming the concert programme into a musical journey through some of Lesvos’ most iconic locations. Performances will begin at the Castle of Mytilene (12 August), continue at the Castle of Ancient Antissa (13 August) and the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production in Agia Paraskevi (16 August), before culminating in the seaside park of Delfinia Hotel in Molyvos, where the festival’s main evening concerts will take place from 17 to 19 August.
This year’s line-up once again reflects the festival’s international reputation, bringing together distinguished musicians including violinists Antje Weithaas and Simos Papanas, cellists Benedict Klöckner and Andreas Brantelid, acclaimed percussionist Pascal Schumacher, and composer and electronic musician Sven Helbig. Rather than presenting touring productions, the festival creates a collaborative environment where artists rehearse together on the island and form unique chamber ensembles exclusively for these performances.

Beyond its concerts, the festival continues its beloved tradition of “Musical Moments”, surprise performances that emerge in Molyvos’ streets, harbour, and tavernas, bringing classical music into everyday life. Educational initiatives also remain central to the programme, with a dedicated Concert for Children and Young People taking place on 18 August, reinforcing the festival’s long-standing commitment to inspiring future generations.
At a time when the Aegean is often viewed through the lenses of tourism or geopolitics, the Molyvos International Music Festival offers a different perspective, highlighting Lesvos as a place of culture, dialogue, and humanistic thought. Its 2026 theme, “Eudaimonia,” is presented not as an escape from reality but as an invitation to rediscover meaning through the transformative power of music and the arts.
