“No Country for Old Men” (Duration: 122′, 2007)
After a botched drug deal on the Texas–Mexico border, a laborer stumbles upon two million dollars in the desert and soon becomes the target of a relentless killer.
Directed by the Coen brothers, the film is an atmospheric adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem, whose performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Released in 2007, the film won four Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor), two BAFTAs, and numerous other awards. It has been recognized by the U.S. Library of Congress as “culturally, aesthetically, and historically significant.”
“Nomadland” (Duration: 107′, 2020)
After losing her husband and her job in her sixties due to the economic recession, a woman (Frances McDormand) decides to adopt a nomadic life, embarking on a journey through the American West in her van. Along the way, she discovers a new way of living and forms deep connections with fellow modern-day nomads.
Starting as a story of solitude and loss, Nomadland ultimately celebrates the beauty of the world and awakens a longing for freedom. Praised for its realism, breathtaking cinematography, and heartfelt performances, the film won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.
“The Tenant” (Duration: 126′, 1976)
A man (Roman Polanski) rents an apartment where the previous tenant committed suicide in the bathroom. As he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings, the hostility of the landlord, concierge, and neighbors deepens his isolation. Following the death of a friend, he gradually descends into paranoia, convinced that everyone conspires to drive him to suicide as well.
An atmospheric psychological thriller with elements of dark comedy, The Tenant is considered by many to be among Polanski’s finest works.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Duration: 115′, 2017)
When the investigation into her daughter’s rape and murder stalls, a grieving mother (Frances McDormand) publicly confronts the local authorities by renting three billboards outside town, accusing the police of negligence and sparking a storm of conflict within the community.
Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the film features standout performances by Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson.
It won two Oscars (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor), four Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor), and five BAFTAs, among many other awards.
“Rango” (Duration: 107′, 2011)
After a car accident leaves a pet chameleon stranded in the desert, he inadvertently kills a hawk hunting him and is hailed as a hero by the local townsfolk. Appointed sheriff by the mayor, Rango must now navigate the wild and lawless frontier.
A brilliantly animated western comedy directed by Gore Verbinski and voiced by Johnny Depp, Rango satirizes political power and economic corruption while entertaining audiences of all ages. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and multiple festival honors.
“The Angels’ Share” (Duration: 101′, 2012)
A young man with a violent past is sentenced to community service after an assault, just before the birth of his first child. Holding his newborn son for the first time, he vows to change his life and secure a better future for his family. But growing up in a poverty-stricken Glasgow neighborhood plagued by unemployment, escaping the margins of society seems impossible—until a visit to a whisky distillery offers an unexpected path forward.
Directed by Ken Loach, this heartfelt comedy is a tender, optimistic tale about redemption, hope, and second chances for society’s less fortunate.
