Cinema made in Italy: a scent of Italy to our screens

Premieres, new talents, restored masterpieces, Pupi Avati and Toni Servillo in Athens

The Greek Film ArchiveCinecittà,  the Italian Embassy to Greece and the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens bring a scent of Italy to our screens and present us 6 new Italian films in Greek premiere,from the greatest international film festivals.

The program also includes two emblematic Italian films in new restored copies, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Marcello Mastroianni: Federico Fellini’s 8 ½ with Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale and Ettore Scola’s A Special Day/Una Giornata Particolare with Marcello Mastroianni and Sofia Loren.

On Sunday, November 24th, the Greek Film Archive will welcome the great Italian director, screenwriter and film producer Pupi Avati, who will attend the screening of his latest film, The American Backyard/L’orto americano.

On the same day, the Greek Film Archive will also host the great Italian actor Toni Servillo for the screening of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning The Great Beauty/La Grande Bellezza. Servillo will be in Athens to perform his show “The voices of Dante/Le voci di Dante”, on the 25th of November at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre “Maria Callas”.

Following the great success of the previous editions, the 4th tribute Cinema made in Italy/Athens will take place from the 21st to the 27th of November (excluding Monday 25/11) in the premises of the Greek Film Archive, presenting a selection of very recent films, representative of contemporary Italian cinema.

Greek premieres, new talents, and special guests will accompany us in a wonderful journey to the homeland of Fellini, Visconti, Pasolini and Antonioni. In total, 9 fiction films will be screened, with important awards in their baggage and participation in the greatest film festivals in the world, including the Berlinale, Locarno and, of course, Venice.

The launching of the tribute will take place on Friday 22nd of November (by invitation only) with the Greek premiere of the film Gloria! by Margherita Vicario. The film was screened at Berlin Film Festival and the actress Maria Vittoria Dallasta will be in attendance.

Μaria Komninos, President of the Board, Greek Film Archive

Cristina Cassano, Cinecittà (“Promotion of Italian contemporary cinema worldwide”)

The film will be screened for the general public on Tuesday 26/11.

On the days of the tribute the directors Carlo Sironi (My Summer with Irène/Quell’estate con Irène, Saturday 23/11, 21:15) and Pupi Avati (The American Backyard/L’orto americano, Sunday 24/11, 18:30) will be in attendance.
