“Confession” by Yorgos Kypris in Santorini

At the heart of Confession, artist Yorgos Kypris’ large-scale installations dominate both the indoor galleries and the enchanting gardens outside. Thirty-four years after opening his gallery MATI in Fira, Santorini, Kypris perseveres in his devotion to the island by establishing an art space in the traditional village of Mesaria. MATI Mesaria is inaugurated by the celebration of his life’s work, showcasing a selection of works that span decades. These dispersed fragments of time meet and converse, creating novel connections and revealing a new context. Kypris offers a profound meditation of the human condition, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in themes such as the beauty of life, his personal fears and his preoccupations about the human race. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience a world where the boundaries between reality and memory blur effortlessly.

MATI Mesaria presents a reflective exhibition consisting of selected works by founder & artist Yorgos Kypris. This collection has been curated to guide the viewer through the artist’s body of work, offering a comprehensive view of his diverse and multifaceted artistic history dating back to the 1990s. A short retrospective, the exhibition selects distinct examples of each of his collections and significant moments in his path to becoming the artist he is today.

Yorgos Kypris was born in Cyprus in 1954. He studied at the Istituto Statale d’ arte ceramica in Faenza, Italy. His work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the USA, while he has also participated in group- exhibitions and shows at museums and foundations in the USA, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Greece, Cyprus and Hungary. His works and installations can be found in public and private collections in Europe, America and Asia. He has published articles in art magazines, and designed jewelry and ceramics for Greek and Italian firms. He lives in Greece and divides his time between Santorini, where he runs the main exhibition space for his work, and his studio in Athens.
